When you think of the best leader you have encountered – what traits, skills, and/or attributes did that leader possess? Leadership Traits – The Positive 3

When you think of a leader you encountered that was not the best – what traits, skills, and/or attributes did that leader exhibit? Leadership Traits – The Issues 4

1. Ethical leadership can help to prevent an organization’s failure. 2. There is a notable difference between being a manager and a leader. 3. Great leaders can be born or made, but usually it is a combination of both. Leadership Questions… Agree or Disagree? 5

4. Leadership is not determined by title but by actions. 5. There is no “right way” to lead in every situation. 6. Good leaders surround themselves with individuals who have the qualities they do not have. Leadership Questions… Agree or Disagree? 6

Common Definition: Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. (Peter Northouse, 2007) Leadership Defined 8

Another Common Definition: Leadership is a process of social influence which maximizes the efforts of others towards achievement of a common goal. (Kruse, 2011) Leadership Defined 9

Preferred Definition: Leadership is the capacity to influence others by unleashing their power and potential to impact the greater good. (Blanchard et al., 2007) Leadership Defined 10

External: From People and Situations  Lack of funding and resources.  Opposition from stakeholders.  Interpersonal problems within the organization.  Organizational Culture & Climate  Lack of trust.  Social, Economic, and Political Forces Leadership Challenges 11

Internal: From Within the Leader  Fear  Lack of confidence.  Insecurity  Impatience and Intolerance  Beliefs and values.  Personality traits and characteristics. Leadership Challenges 12

From Leadership Itself  Demands and Responsibilities  Motivating people and themselves.  Balancing the professional and personal. Leadership Challenges 13

When are challenges most obvious?  When starting something new.  When something is about to end.  When times are tough.  During transitions.  During a crises – personal or professional. Leadership Challenges 14

Coping with external challenges:  Be proactive.  Be creative.  Face conflict squarely.  Look for common ground.  Look for opportunities to collaborate. Leadership Challenges 15

Coping with internal challenges:  Listen  Ask for feedback.  Observe what is going on around you.  Reach out for help. Leadership Challenges 16

Coping with challenges from the leadership role itself:  Revisit your vision  Share the burden.  Find a confidant or mentor.  Make time for yourself. Leadership Challenges 17

Remember:  No write or wrong answers.  Leadership is a process and develops over time and has many elements.  An assessment is a tool – there is no one assessment that will gauge performance 100% of the time.  Different situations may call for different leadership.
