His dad wanted him to be a tanner, but Ulysses hated it. He went to West Point College, and was an average student. He didn’t like it there. People thought his name was Ulysses Simpson Grant, not Hirman Ulysses Grant; so he went by Ulysses S. Grant.

 Married to Julia Dent. They were engaged in 1844, and married on August 22 nd,  Fredrick Dent was Ulysses’ friend in the war. When Ulysses met Julia, they both shared a love of horseback riding, reading, and poetry.  They had 4 children, Fredrick, Ulysses Jr., Ellen, and Jesse.

First election  Vice president: Choy Lercolfax  Running against Horatio Seymour Second Election  Vice President: Henry Wilson  Running against Horace Greeley Ulysses had an easy win both elections.

 He signed the Specie Resumption Act in He was against the idea of The Act, but Congress liked the Act. The Specie Resumption Act means there will be more paper money made.

Ulysses and his family traveled around the world. They went to Europe, Africa, The Middle East, India, and Asia. After the trip, they had no more money. Ulysses didn’t want his family to suffer with no money after his death, so he wrote an auto- biography called Personal Memoirs. Mark Twain published the book.

 Ulysses was friends with Mark Twain, who published his Auto-biography.  He traveled around the world after his presidency.  He has the biggest over-ground tomb in North America. It’s located in New York City.  His real name is Hirman Ulysses Grant, but people at West Point thought it was Ulysses Simpson Grant.
