How to Contact Your School Counselor Visit your counselor before school, during break, during lunch, or after school. This method is best if you have a concern or question that can be addressed quickly. Fill out a “Request to see your counselor” slip (available in the Counseling Office across from the secretary’s desk). For an urgent matter which requires immediate attention and cannot be addressed through the other methods, you may come in to see your counselor anytime. General High School Requirements Complete a minimum of 230 credits. Complete all course requirements. Including Health Pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) in: Language Arts Mathematics Passing Algebra I (or Integrated Math I) is a state mandated graduation requirement (can be met in middle school).

Summer School Courses District Summer Courses Summer school courses will only be offered to current juniors and seniors who are behind in credits for graduation. Off Campus Courses (at your own expense) For off campus classes, students must receive approval from their counselor prior to taking the class. The off campus permission form must be signed by a parent and be on record with the counselor. The form is available on the website. **Students may take up to 30 approved credits off campus at other schools throughout high school.

Community College Requirements High School Diploma or be 18 years old No SAT or ACT required A Mira Costa College Ambassador is available in the Counseling Office on Thursdays. Sign up with your counselor. You can take classes concurrently during the year/summer for FREE with an Off Campus Permission Form.

History/Social Science 2 years: World History, U.S. History/Government B. English 4 years: English 9, 10, 11, 12 C. Math 3 years of college prep math (4 years is highly recommended): Algebra 1(Int. Language other than English 2 years same language (3 years is recommended) *Students with competency in a language other than English may qualify for an exemption. F. Introducing the … PSAT- New! SAT Reasoning Test- New! ACT SAT Subject Tests

PSAT The PSAT is a practice exam for the SAT Reasoning Test. Taken in grade 11, the PSAT is also the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The PSAT offered in October 2015 is redesigned to align with the new SAT being offered for the first time in March 2015. Key changes: *Clearer, stronger focus on the knowledge, skills, and understandings most important for college and career readiness and success *½ hour longer (2 hours 45 minutes) *No penalty for incorrect answers *Composite score of 400-1600 instead of 60-240

SAT Reasoning Information The redesigned SAT will be offered for the first time in March 2016 Common Core Emphasis The new test covers: Reading/Writing and Math with an Optional Essay (colleges determine whether essay is required) No penalty for incorrect answers New score ranges 400-1600 To learn more and to register, visit www.collegeboard.com Torrey Pines High School does not include SAT scores on your high school transcript.

ACT Testing Information The exam covers five subject areas: English Grammar Math (up to trigonometry) Reading Comprehension Science Reasoning Writing (optional) Students should be prepared for these exams by the Spring of their junior year. SAT Subject Tests This is a supplemental exam that may be required by some more selective colleges and/or programs. Some schools require 2, if not 3, exams in different subject areas. College Board also creates the AP exams, so if you are in an AP class, you should also sign-up to take the subject test in that course (i.e. World History, Chemistry) Check individual college websites to confirm test requirements.

Preparing for College Begin to keep track of any extracurricular activities, sports, or community services activities that you participate in. In Naviance the “Resume” link under “About Me” is a great way to track this information. Consider taking SAT Subject Tests in classes that you are doing well in this year. (May or June) Take the PSAT exam in October of 11th grade. Plan on taking the SAT and/or ACT by the spring of your Junior year.
