This is a Flash Drive. It is also known as a: Key Drive, Thumb Drive, Jump Drive, USB Drive, Pen Drive.

Open cover before use. Flash Drives come in different memory sizes. The Flash Drive provided to you by Mtn. Home Schools will hold 256 mb/

Some of our school computers have a door on the front side of the computer. When opened, will reveal the USB ports and headphone port.

This is called the “USB port” There are two USB ports in this picture…Your computer can have 1 or more. Located on the front or back of your computer. USB ports are used to connect many different items to the computer.

Insert the Flash Drive or the extension cord provided into the USB Port. The Flash Drive or cord will fit in the proper direction only.

When you insert the Flash Drive into the USB Port, your computer should automatically recognize it and let you know.

From your desktop screen open the “My Computer” icon.

Look for a new drive letter …sometimes called Removable storage; USB Disk; etc… The letter may not always be the same…it depends on what other equipment you have attached to your computer.

Before any file on your Flash Drive can be used on the Mountain Home Public Schools Computer Network, it must be virus scanned!! From My Computer, Right click on SecureGuard Icon Click on Scan for viruses

Click on “Scanner” to reveal the drop-down menu. Click on “Start Scanning” You will hear a “beep” when it is finished. IF nothing shows up…it’s safe to use.

Copying files from PC - TO a Flash Drive

Open “My Computer” and locate the files you wish to save to the flash drive. Right click on the file and click on send to and select your drive.

Or, if you are working in a program such as word, excel, etc. Click on Save As and navigate until you get to the letter of your flash drive.

There are other ways to do the same thing. Open two windows then “Drag & Drop” into the Flash Drive also. Flash Drive (E) Computer Hard Drive (C)

WHEN COPYING IS FINISHED, DO NOT IMMEDIATELY REMOVE THE FLASH DRIVE FROM THE USB PORT! Look at the small icon in red box. Left-click on it and find the Flash Drive letter. When you see the message “Safe to Remove Hardware” …you can remove Flash Drive.

Copying files FROM Flash Drive - TO Computer

Moving files from Flash Drive to computer is just the same as moving files from computer to Flash Drive with the exception that you MUST scan the Flash Drive before you move files from it to a school computer. Review How to Virus Scan a Drive After the virus scan is finished. 1. Locate the files you want to move. Open “My Computer” on the desktop.

Locate the Flash Drive letter and open it.

Highlight and right click on the file you want to move to the computer

Click on “Send To” – then locate “My Documents” and select the folder you wish to use and click. File(s) will transfer to your computer.

WHEN COPYING IS FINISHED, DO NOT IMMEDIATELY REMOVE THE FLASH DRIVE FROM THE USB PORT! Look at the small icon in red box. Left-click on it and find the Flash Drive letter. When you see the message “Safely Remove Hardware” …you can now safely remove the Flash Drive. Remember To Do This!!
