The life of our beloved Holy Prophet (peace be upon him)

Jinns Accept Islam On the way back to Makkah, Holy Prophet spent the night at Nakhla. Next morning as he was reciting the Glorious Quran, a group of Jinns passed by and started listening to the melodious and heart-rendering recitation of the Holy Prophet. The Jinns were very much moved by the powerful recitation of the Holy Quran. They instantly recognised the Holy Quran as the Book of Allah and accepted Islam.

Jinns Accept Islam The Holy Quran narrates this incident in Surah al-Ahqaf (29- 31). And (remember) when We sent towards you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) a group (three to ten persons) of the jinn, (quietly) listening to the Qur’ân. When they stood in the presence thereof, they said: "Listen in silence!" And when it was finished, they returned to their people, as warners.

They said: "O our people! Verily, we have heard a Book (this Qur’ân) sent down after Mûsâ (Moses), confirming what came before it: it guides to the truth and to the Straight Path (i.e. Islâm).

O our people! Respond (with obedience) to Allâh’s Caller (i.e. Allâh’s Messenger Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), and believe in him (i.e. believe in that which Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم has brought from Allâh and follow him). He (Allâh) will forgive you of your sins, and will save you from a painful torment (i.e. Hell-fire)

Jinns Accept Islam The acceptance of Islam by the Jinns highlights the working of Allah. Initially, Holy Prophet went to Taif to call them to the way of Allah, yet no one answered. On the face of it, it was an apparent failure. However, it was the will of Allah that during this trip Jinns would become Muslims instead of humans. Thus, the journey to Taif was successful for the Holy Prophet as a totally new nation came under the fold of Islam. This incident also highlights the universality of the message of Islam. Islam is not only for humans for Jinns too.

From Nakhla to Makkah Next morning, Holy Prophet left Nakhla for Makkah. Makkah was the birth city of Holy Prophet and he had spent his whole life there. All his relatives, family members and friends were in Makkah. However, now Makkah was not a safe place for him anymore. Firstly, Holy Prophet had been outside of Makkah for nearly a month. The outward failure of his trip to Taif, the blunt rejection by the people of Taif for the message of Islam and their cruel and insensitive conduct with the Holy Prophet had reached Makkah.

From Nakhla to Makkah If Holy Prophet wanted to settle back into Makkah, he would need strong support, or tribal protection from someone. He did not need this type of protection before as he had the protection of his beloved uncle, Hadrat Abu Talib. To seek this tribal protection, Holy Prophet first approached al-Akhnas and Suhail bin Amr. They both declined to give their support to the Holy Prophet against the Makkan chiefs. Then they approached another powerful chief, Mut-im bin Adi, who agreed to give his protection to Holy Prophet.

From Nakhla to Makkah Holy Prophet entered Makkah with Mut-im bin Adi and his sons and went direct to the Ka’ba to perform Tawaf (seven rounds of the Ka’ba). Mut-im and his sons were spread around the Ka’ba and Holy Prophet performed Tawaf under their security. Through this action, it was clear to the Makkans that Mut-im had agreed to provide his protection to the Holy Prophet. For a moment, it appeared to Makkans as if Mut-im had also converted to Islam. They asked him if he was only providing protection to Holy Prophet or he had also become a Muslim. Unfortunately, Mut-im replied that he was only providing protection to the Prophet.

From Nakhla to Makkah A question may arise that why did Holy Prophet accept support and protection of a non-Muslim. The answer is very simple. If he had not taken this protection, it would have been impossible for him to enter Makkah and live a safe life there. He would have to move to outskirts of Makkah, with little interaction with the people and less opportunities to call people to the way of Islam. His supporters and new Muslims still living in Makkah would have faced renewed hostility and opposition.

From Nakhla to Makkah During these circumstance, it was more than appropriate to seek protection of a non-Muslim in order to preserve peace and harmony in the society. Mut-im bin Adi, despite not being a believer, had done a favour to Holy Prophet, and the Prophet always remembered this favour. Holy Prophet always remembered Mut-im with good words. During the triumph victory in the battle of Badr (three years after migrating to Madina), seventy Makkans had been captured as war prisoners. At that time Holy Prophet remarked: “If Mut-im had been alive today and had interceded on the behalf of these prisoners, I would have set them all free.”
