Broken-Line Graphs

 In your math notebook, define the following words:  Line graph - a graph whose points are connected by a line or line segments to represent data – usually has one line or line segment  Broken-line graph- a graph whose points are connected by a line or line segments to represent data – includes two or more line segments  Precipitation - a deposit on the earth of hail, mist, rain, sleet, or snow  Graph key - used to identify the number of categories present in a graph

 Turn to page 140 in your student reference book  Use the graph in the example to answer the following questions:  What do the horizontal and vertical axes show?  What can you conclude from the graph?

 Science Link  Broken-line graphs are often used to show trends and the results of scientific studies.  As a class, we will complete math journal page 18

 The average number of days with a trace of precipitation (at least 0.01 inch) is shown for each month with a dot  Line segments are then used to connect consecutive dots

 What month has the greatest number of days with precipitation?  How can you tell?  Which season has more days with precipitation— winter or summer?  Which month has the least number of days with precipitation?  How can you tell?  Can you tell from the graph which month has the greatest amount of precipitation?  Is there a period in which little change occurred?  How would you describe the pattern or trend shown by the graph?

 Double-line graphs are often used to show comparative changes over time  The graph of page 19 consists of two broken-line graphs on the same set of axes making it a double-line graph  Look at the graph key  Why is that so important?  What data sets could be displayed using double-line graphs?
