Gluing and Clamping

Gluing There are many different types of adhesives for many different types of jobs. Glues can be used to bond wood to wood, wood to metal, metal to metal, ceramic to wood, concrete to ceramic, wood to concrete……the list goes on.

Construction Adhesives Thermoplastics: –Most widely used woodworking adhesive. –Commonly called white glues –Cure by losing moisture –Types: acrylic resin – water resistant aliphatic thermoplastic resin – yellow hot melts – can bond most any material

Thermosets Alpha cyanocrylate – super glue Epoxy – mixed before using creating one of the strongest bonds. Expensive

Contact Cements Solvent Borne – used to bond veneer. Applied to both surfaces. Once dried, bond is immediate Waterborne Solvent – Safer to use

Mastic Thick contact cement widely used in construction applications ie: sheathing, drywall or sub-flooring.
