For adults, individuals requiring care for incontinence are limited to two-hour outings, and there is a lack of means by which incontinent care can be provided. Oftentimes, unsafe or expensive accommodations must be made on the fly. Needs A portable changing table with adjustable height and angle that provides privacy and comfort for the disabled and caretakers. Project Scope Develop a portable changing system to assist those caring for a developmentally disabled adult, such that incontinent care can be provided safely and privately in a variety of settings. Retrofitted Oakworks© Boss™ table to meet sponsor’s wants and needs. Added 1/8” thick aluminum backing to foam and vinyl for angling mechanism. Attached a “U” shaped bar to either side near the head of the table. - Allows the backing to be set at angles of 10 and 20 degrees. Four fiberglass poles attached via bolt and bracket to each corner of table. Nylon fabric cover surrounding assembly to allow privacy. Four PVC railings surrounding table, fit into individual aluminum brackets. - Locked vertically up or down via two pins for each bracket. - Overlap one another when the entire unit is folded in half. Folded up table can be rolled suitcase-style via two wheels on one side. Potential solutions for each component were weighed against the benchmark in a custom scoring system designed to evaluate how they addressed design metrics. Concepts scored via Likert scale (- 2 to 2) with benchmark assigned score of 0. Design metrics ranked in importance through sponsor input, team discussion, and research. Concepts were assigned a total score: summation of the multiplication of the Likert scale score and Pscore for each metric. Weight: Final weight 48 lbs (via scale) Size-related metrics: Measured in the appropriate manner, X’’ x Y’’ x Z’’ Parts to use: Counted in user testing: X part minimum Safety: 2 straps, Railings do meet FDA Safety Guidelines and held a X pound load Wind/Rain Simulation: Initial failure. Redesign of privacy allowed for retention of 100% concealment and a waterproof design throughout testing. Cleanliness: Fabric was unchanged after 1000 washes. (Pictured?)
