Tailwinds Flying Club Spring Safety Session Know your airplane Cherokee Six 300 (PA )

How NOT to land a Piper Cherokee. Know your airplane – Cherokee Six

Single Engine – Fixed-Gear Aircraft Know your airplane – Cherokee Six *Based on the 2006 NALL Report

Know your airplane – Cherokee Six The Cherokee Six is a complex airplane because it has a controllable pitch propeller. Well, maybe, the FAR/AIM states complex Airplanes as; “an airplane that has a retractable landing gear, flaps, and a controllable pitch propeller’. The Six does not have retractable landing gear.

Know your airplane – Cherokee Six The Cherokee Six is a high-performance airplane because it has more than 200 horsepower. The FAR/AIM classifies a high-performance airplane as; “an airplane with an engine of more than 200 horsepower.” The Six is so classified and flight time should be logged as high-performance in your log book.

Know your airplane – Cherokee Six What is the total fuel capacity of the club Six? What is the correct fuel grade? What is the recommended grade and type of oil? What brand and grade(s) does the club purchase for the planes? 98 gal. (94 gal. Usable ) 100 LL (Blue) 100/130 (Green) 30W50 (Summer) 5W50 (Winter) Phillips 20W50

Know your airplane – Cherokee Six What is the airplane basic empty weight? What is the maximum gross takeoff weight? What is the Normal category useful load? What is the baggage capacity? 1905 lbs lbs. 200 lbs. (100 lbs. forward and 100 lbs. aft) 3400 lbs.

Know your airplane – Cherokee Six Determine Weight and Balance before flight W & B scenario 1: Pilot & Co-Pilot -200 lbs lbs = 375 lbs. Center Seat Passenger lbs. Rear Seat Passengers- 35 lbs + 40 lbs = 75 lbs. Baggage - Forward compartment = 75 lbs. Aft compartment = 75 lbs. Fuel - 30 gal. / wing =360 lbs.

Know your airplane – Cherokee Six Scenario 1 is within the envelope.

Know your airplane – Cherokee Six Changing weight distribution – does it matter? W & B scenario 2: Pilot & Co-Pilot -200 lbs lbs 375 lbs. Center Seat Passenger lbs. Rear Seat Passengers- 35 lbs + 40 lbs 75 lbs. Baggage - Forward compartment 100 lbs. Aft compartment 50 lbs. Fuel - 30 gal. / left + 45 gal. right 360 lbs.

Know your airplane – Cherokee Six Oops!

Know your airplane – Cherokee Six Normal takeoff, flaps up? Best rate of climb (Vy)? Best angle of climb (Vx)? Maneuvering speed, gross weight (Va)? Never exceed speed (Vne)? KIAS 89 KIAS 79 KIAS 131 KIAS 192 KIAS Recommended Air Speeds

Know your airplane – Cherokee Six The Cherokee Six is the only club plane with an autopilot that has both attitude and altitude holds.

Know your airplane – Cherokee Six Autopilot use is prohibited above what airspeed? 170 KIAS What is the procedure for disconnecting the autopilot in an emergency? Pushing the control wheel switch button Pulling the autopilot circuit breaker Use of the autopilot is prohibited during takeoff / landing
