Purpose This lesson provides information on the basic design and identifies the three parts of the Marine Corps emblem.

1. Identify the three components of the Marine Corps emblem. 2. Explain what each component of the emblem represents. 3. Define the historical significance.

 In 1776, the device consisted of a “foul anchor” of silver that still forms a part of the emblem today.  In 1868, Brigadier General Commandant Jacob Zeilin appointed a board to design a new emblem.

The Marine Corps emblem consists of:  A globe (showing the Western Hemisphere)  A fouled anchor  A spread eagle (which carries a streamer that says “Semper Fidelis”

 The globe signifies service in any part of the world.  The eagle is the bald eagle, strictly an American variety.  The anchor indicates the amphibious nature of Marines’ duties.
