5 th Grade – Social Studies Chinquapin Elementary School – 1 st Semester Alecia Blizzard

Topics to be covered… Native Americans Explorers Colonial Times American Revolution Foundations of Government Westward Expansion Immigration Civil War Economics Civic Responsibility

Social Studies Common Assessment o Students will receive a study guide/review packet closer to the Common Assessment. o Similar to End-of-Grade (but shorter) o Common Assessment will have 26 Multiple Choice questions and 2 Constructed Response questions. o Common Assessment will be towards the end of January.

Topics to be covered… Weather (Clouds, Instruments, Weather Patterns, etc) Water Cycle (Evaporation/Transpiration, Condensation, Precipitation, Run-off) Matter and Energy/Properties (Solids, Liquids, Gases and how they change)

Force and Motion (Gravity, Newton’s Laws of Motion) Human Body (Circulatory, Respiratory, Skeletal, Muscular, Digestive) Genetics and Heredity (Humans, Plants, Animals) Ecosystems (Terrestrial v. Aquatic, Producers, Consumers, Decomposers)

Science End-of-Grade Test o Students will be given a review packet towards the end of school year. We will work on it daily and students will be encouraged to review at night with parents/guardians. o All multiple choice questions. o All topics will be on test – vocabulary is essential!

Classroom Information… Please look for unit test – they should be signed and returned to school. Encourage students to ask questions during class. Students should keep all notes, handouts, etc. for the remainder of the semester.
