Positive Attitude No matter what

Attitude and Success Can a teacher be a good teacher without a good attitude? Can a student be a good student without a good attitude? Can a employer or an employee be good in their roles without a good attitude? The foundation of success regardless of your chosen field is attitude. If attitude is such a critical factor shouldn’t we posses positive attitude

What is Attitude? Attitude is the way we behave, attitude is the way we react to things. We always have a choice to look at things positively or negatively and which one to chose depends upon our attitude. For example; One can seek respect or earn respect One can be active or passive One can be proud or modest One can be positive or negative One can be Autocratic or Democratic One can respect laws/rules or don’t bother The basic fact is; if we have a choice why not to choose the better and success lies in choosing the better

Factors that determines our Attitudes We are not borne with set of attitudes but we develop as we mature. There are three factors that largely determine our attitude formation. These are the triple Es of attitude: Environment: Home, school, work, society and culture etc. Experience: Experience with various people and at various places and at various times. Experience and events becomes reference points in our lives. Education: Formal and informal education. The role of educator is vital.

Benefits of a Positive Attitude Benefits for individual: Pleasing personality, increases enjoyment in life, inspires others, self development, job satisfaction, contributing member to society and asset of the country Your attitude determines your altitude Benefit for the organization: Increase productivity, fosters teamwork, improves work quality, reduces stress, solves problem, asset of organization, breeds loyalty and makes congenial atmosphere etc

How to build a Positive Attitude If we want to build and maintain a positive attitude we need to consciously practice the following steps: Step I: Change Focus, Look for the positive We need to focus on positive things of our life. Start looking for what is right in a person or situation instead of looking for what is wrong Step II: Make a habit of doing it now Procrastination leads to negative attitude and regret later. If we want to build and maintain a positive attitude, we have to get into the habit of living in present and doing it now. We have to remember the saying “now or never”.

How to build a Positive Attitude Step III: Develop an attitude of gratitude Let us count our blessings not our troubles. We are so focused on complaining about things we do not have and lose sight of the things we have. Avoid selective listening (listen what you want). Exp: Doctor and Drug Addicts Step IV: Get into continuous education programme We don’t need more academic education, what we need is moral education. A morally educated person will be lot better than a morally bankrupt person with excellent academic qualifications. Learning is like eating. It is not how much we eat that matters, what matters is how much we digest

How to build a Positive Attitude Step V: Build a positive self-esteem Self-esteem is the way we feel about ourselves. When we feel good within, our performance goes up and our relationships improve both at home and at work. There is direct co-relation between our feelings and behavior. One of the quickest way to build self-esteem is to do something for those who cannot repay you in cash or kind Step VI: Stay away from negative influences Don’t let negative people drag you down. Remember that a person’s character is not only judged by the company they keep but also the company they avoid.

How to build a Positive Attitude Step VII: Learn to like things that need to be done We need to do our work whether we like it or not. This may not always be fun and may even be painful (Exp: mothers caring for their young). But if we learn to like the task, the impossible becomes possible. Therefore the best way is to love the work that we do. Step VIII: Start your day with something positive Read or listen or do something positive (first thing in the morning). Exp: meditation is a good practice. It sets the tone for the day, and puts us in the right frame of mind to make the day a positive day.

Action Plan for Building a Positive Attitude Make a list of things you would like to change about yourself. Seek the help of your friends and colleagues and acknowledge their contribution. List the benefit to you from the changes. List the benefit to your colleagues and family members from the changes. List the benefit to your institution from the changes. Establish a time table and commit yourself to make changes See if you are experiencing changes

Conclusion We are borne with five senses (hear, smell, feel, taste and see). We need to develop sixth sense i.e. common-sense which will help us to build a positive attitude. Success is not an accident. It is the result of our attitude and our attitude is our choice. Hence success is a matter of choice and not chance and choose for the success of your Career. Finally, the only thing that is truly yours that no one can control or take from you - is YOUR ATTITUDE, so if you can take care of that, everything else in life becomes much easier. All the best and good luck!
