By: Daniel Teasley

When should you get new ones and test them? get new ones every eight to ten years clean them every six months change the batteries every two years Test them around every month or two

Can they save your life? Around 890 lives could be saved if all homes had working smoke detectors The death rate with smoke detectors is 51% lower than people without them People have a 50% better chance to survive a building fire with smoke detectors

Where to put them and how many do you need? Put them in or outside of a sleeping area Depending on the levels of the house you should have at least two on the main level None in the kitchen because that will cause a lot of false alarms You need to put one beside the kitchen not in the kitchen

Summary Yes smoke detectors can save your life. But you need to know where to put them and have around two on each floor. You also need to test them around every month and change the batteries every two years. If you don’t they could stop working and you could be stuck in your house with a fire right beside you. If you don’t have smoke detectors you could die or get hurt and get a severe injury
