ENDOCRINE SYSTEM By: Mr. Mott

WHAT DOES THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM DO? The endocrine system controls your body functions. It produces hormones the travel throughout your body. The hormones help maintain your tissues and organs. Aids with reproduction, responses to stress and injury, growth and sexual development, body energy levels, internal balance of body systems, bone and muscular strength.

PARTS OF THE ENDORINE SYSTEM Hypothalamus Pituitary Gland Thyroid Gland Parathyroid Glands Adrenal Glands Pancreas

HYPOTHALAMUS Located in the lower central part of the brain. It regulates metabolism and body temperature. It makes you feel hunger and thirst.

PITUITARY GLAND Located at the base of the brain, beneath the hypothalamus. About the size of pea. Very important part of the endocrine system. It produces hormones that control many functions of other endocrine glands.

THYROID GLAND Located in the lower front part of the neck. Produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolism. It also assists in bone growth and development of the brain and nervous system in children. Lastly, thyroid hormones help maintain normal blood pressure, heart rate, digestion, muscle tone, and reproductive functions.

PARATHYROID GLANDS Two pairs of small glands that are embedded in the surface of the thyroid glans. One pair on each side. The release a hormone that helps regulate calcium levels in the blood and bone metabolism.

ADRENAL GLANDS Triangular-shaped glands located on top of each kidney. Assists in regulating the body’s metabolism, balancing the salt and water in the body, immune system, and sexual function. In addition, the adrenal glands help the body cope with physical and emotional stress by increasing heart rate and blood pressure.

PANCREAS It is an elongated organ located toward the back of the abdomen behind the stomach. It secrets digestive enzymes to help break down food. Also, it secretes insulin (to help regulate the level of glucose, sugar, in the blood.

VOCABULARY Adrenaline-stress hormone produced within the adrenal gland that quickens the heart beat. Gland-a group of cells that secrete a substance for us in the body. Hormones-chemicals that are produced by endocrine glands.

SYSTEM FAILURE The endocrine system may produce too much or too little growth hormone (very tall or very short). Diabetes-When the pancreas has issues with insulin (2 types). Hyperthyroidism-when levels of thyroid hormones in the blood are excessively high Hypothyroidism-when levels of thyroid in the blood are abnormally low.

KEEPING THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM HEALTHY Eating right, exercising, getting plenty of sleep, and reducing your stress level with help keep your hormones and endocrine system balanced.

FACTS Alcohol has widespread effects on the endocrine system. Plants produce hormones without having an endocrine system. There are over 30 hormones in the human body.
