Symbolism Via Street Art Quickwrite: What is the function of art? What is it intended to provide people with?

Symbolism Via Street Art Aesthetics - a set of principles concerned with the nature and appreciation of beauty, especially in art. Art often exists for its beauty alone. However, street artists often use this medium to spread social consciousness and cultural awareness. It is art for everyone that is usually made for free.

What is Symbolism? How is this different from metaphors? Symbolism – A method of attaching sentiments, images, traits, and ideas to the attributes of another image. Ex. = peace Symbols are interpretive and subjective (their meaning can changed based on who reads a text). Symbols imply and suggest. Just as symbols are subjective, the themes they supplement are as well. Extended metaphor – a literary comparison between two objects that continues throughout an entire work, text, or story. Metaphors are direct substitution and more objective. These devices supplement allegory (a narrative that is meant to be compared to another narrative).

How does a reader receive meaning from subjectivity? Symbols are subjective and their meaning in a text varies depending on a reader’s experience. What does symbolize to Americans? What does the same symbol mean to many Muslims? However, certain colors and images reference ideas that are universal to many cultures and human experiences. Ex. For almost all people, is a symbol of death or danger.

Street Art In order to raise awareness of certain issues, street and graffiti artists use different symbols and associations to stress certain themes. For each picture that will be shown, analyze the symbols used and how it is designed to teach a certain theme. What theme is supposed to be taught? Which colors reinforce this theme? How? What symbols reinforce this theme? How? Record these answers below.
