Biggest Mistakes Students Make What do you think is the biggest mistake students make when reading the textbook?
I should read every word of the Text Fact vs. Fiction I should read every word of the text.
Many of the words used in writing grammatically correct sentences actually convey no meaning. Look for people, places, dates, events, terms, court cases, laws, etc. Don’t spend forever on the individual words rather try piecing together ideas Look at the BIG picture vs. the little one!
Fact vs. Fiction Reading once is enough.
Skim once to GET the main idea Reread more carefully to plug the gaps in your knowledge.
Fact vs. Fiction Taking Notes is a waste of time.
Maybe the way YOU are taking notes IS a waste of time your but don’t discard the idea! Find what works for you! This is different from student to student. What you are used to is not always the best method!
No one method works for everyone. Sometimes it is a process of trial and error to find what works for you. Knowing your learning style can really help you to determine what is right for you! Give 3-DT a try! --Do you learn better by: doing, listening, seeing???? I’m me…there isn’t a “right way”, only a “right way” for me
Just because there is not a right way doesn’t mean there are not bad ways! Try chunking your work. Reading loads of material at a time will make you tired and forgetful. Schedule small breaks. This will help you to digest the material and understand it better. Cramming=BAD IDEACramming=BAD IDEA Ever catch yourself reading the same words over and over again? Time for a break!
