When do we use SIMPLE PAST?

Uses O Instructions: Carefully read the description of each use of the past simple and complete the scheme presented below.

Use nº1: Completed action in the past O Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past. PAST PRESENTFUTURE

Use nº2: A series of completed actions O Use the Simple Past to list a series of completed actions in the past. PAST PRESENTFUTURE

Use nº3: Duration in past O The Simple Past can be used to refer to a longer action which starts and stops in the past. PAST PRESENTFUTURE

Verbs used in SIMPLE PAST

Regular Verbs O Observe the following list of verbs in their past form and identify the pattern: O worked O played O needed O stayed O painted

Verb to be O The verb "be" is also irregular in the Simple Past. Unlike other irregular verbs, there are two Simple Past forms: "was" and "were." POSITIVE I was. You were. We were. They were. He was. She was. It was.

O NOTE: remember that you only use past verbs in statements. In negative forms "did" indicates Simple Past.
