Crime & Punishment The Causes of Crime L.O. 1. Understanding the causes of crime in the U.K. L.O. 2. How society tackles the causes of crime

Task 1 In groups of 2, 3 or 4 come up with 5 reasons why people commit crime in this country. Task 2 For each of your 5 causes of crime suggest one way that society could tackle that problem and hopefully reduce crime in our society.

Task 3 Identify which, if any, of your solutions involve a religious aspect. Try to suggest a religious response to each of the Five causes of crime you have indicated. How successful to you think these would be? Task 4 Example Question (imagine) Someone has kidnapped and murdered The Prime Minister.... why?

Task 6 “Anyone found carrying a gun or a knife should be sent straight to prison” What do you think? Give reasons for your opinion.

Some causes of crime: Poverty.Peer pressure. Psychological problems.Family history. Environment.Disposition to evil. BoredomRevenge Effect of crime Cost people their lives Medical costs, property losses and loss of income Victims can feel anxiety or depression Fear of crime (people are scared to go out) Society pays (insurance goes up, extra lights, security etc)

Religious responses to the causes of crime: Missions to areas of deprivation. Youth projects. Reports to authorities. Support for vulnerable individuals. Residential homes for at risk children. Encouragement of deterrent sentencing. Encouragement of retributive sentencing. Encouragement of reformative sentencing.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Religious Approach to crime Strength – in line with their own religious teaching. Strength – offers hope. Strength – supports local initiatives. Strength – portrays religion in a positive light through offering practical help. Weakness – scraping the surface of the problem. Weakness – does not have the resources to make a real difference. Weakness – low success rate. Weakness – faith is not enough to solve what is a very complex problem.
