Topic Map Topic 14 Lesson 1 = Capacity Units Lesson 2= Capacity using Nonstandard Units Lesson 3 = Cups, Pints and Quarts Lesson 4 = Liters Lesson 5 = Exploring Weight Lesson 6 = Ounces and Pounds Lesson 7 = Grams and Kilograms Lesson 8=Problem Solving: Use Objects

Compare the capacities of two different containers. Focus Lesson 14.1 Compare the capacities of two different containers.

Topic 14 Heavier: an object that weighs more than another object. Liter: Unit for measuring capacity Pound: Unit for measuring capacity. Same as 16 ounces.

Lesson 14.1 Identify which container holds more or less. Use containers from around the classroom that can hold things such as water and sand. Example: spoon, cup, bowl, bucket.

Estimate and measure capacity using nonstandard units. Focus Lesson 14.2 Estimate and measure capacity using nonstandard units.

Lesson 14.2 Use cups to measure how much other containers can hold using water, sand or rice.

How can you decide if an object holds about a cup, pint or quart? Focus Lesson 14-3 How can you decide if an object holds about a cup, pint or quart?

Lesson 14-3 Cup (c) Pint (pt) Quart (qt)

Lesson 14.3 Use various containers from real life that hold a cup, pint and quart. Discuss what objects in real life have the capacity of each measurement.

Focus Lesson 14.4 How can you tell if an object holds more than, less than or about 1 liter?

Liter (L): A standard unit of measuring capacity. Lesson 14.4 Liter (L): A standard unit of measuring capacity.

Lesson 14.4 Display a container that holds about a quart. Fill up a liter container. Discuss if the container holds less than, more than or about 1 liter.

How can you find out if an object is heavier than another? Focus Lesson 14.5 How can you find out if an object is heavier than another?

Heavier/Lighter: A term used to compare weight Lesson 14.5 Heavier/Lighter: A term used to compare weight

Lesson 14.5 Use a balance scale to put different objects on each side. Compare which object is heavier and lighter. What does the scale look like when something is heavier? Lighter?

How can you use ounces and pounds to estimate how much objects weigh? Focus Lesson 14.6 How can you use ounces and pounds to estimate how much objects weigh?

Lesson 14.6 Ounces Pounds

Lesson 14.6 Explain that many items are sold by weight. Lighter items are measured by ounces and heavier items are measured by pounds. Use a scale to compare.

How can you use grams and kilograms to measure objects? Focus Lesson 14.7 How can you use grams and kilograms to measure objects?

Lesson 14.7 Grams Kilograms

Lesson 14.7 Show a balance scale, a 1 gram object and a 1 kilogram object. Find things around the classroom that would weigh about the same.

Focus Lesson 14.8 How can an object be measured in different ways using different non-standard units?

Lesson 14.8 Display different classroom objects. Discuss different ways to measure each object. Use various containers and objects from real life.
