NLII Mission Education that is... Active and Learner- Centered Dynamic & Lifelong Collaborative Cost Effective Accessible High Quality

Goals  Transforming learning environments to focus on student learning outcomes  Developing tools and standards to support new learning environments  Advancing our understanding of the virtual university by showcasing best practices in distributed learning  Creating a market structure for the development of interactive learning materials  Providing evidence of the viability of the NLII's vision, including outcomes assessment and cost/benefit analyses  Articulating those public and institutional policy issues that inhibit the creation of a national learning infrastructure

Why be a member?  Registration fee waived for the first five participants from your institution or organization to attend the NLII Annual Meeting (normally $800 per person)  Registration fee waived for three participants each from your institution or organization to attend the three NLII Focus Sessions held annually (normally $250 per person)

Why be a member, cont.  Influence direction of NLII and advance national goals  Learn about emergent technology, practices, and issues related to teaching and learning  Participate in a high-level national forum on transforming teaching and learning and influence national policy

Why be a member, cont  Participate in communities of practice that benefit from and enlarge a body of knowledge  Beta-test and pilot new products and services  Have early access (one year) to developing white papers, books, projects & web resources

Transformative Assessment  Transformative assessment systems are institution- wide assessment strategies that are: – Based on institutional vision and goals. – Implemented in an integrated way for all levels (the course, the program, and the institution) –Aligned around systematically transforming teaching and learning, to improve student learning outcomes. –Used as a tool for communicating the nature of the desired transformation of teaching and learning. –Include the design, planning, implementation and evaluation of the use of technology.  “Transformative assessment works by providing students and teachers with insight into learning processes and their results. It assumes that deepened insight will lead to individual, programmatic, and institutional improvements.” (quote from TAPONLINE participant).

Key Theme 2002/2003 Virtual Communities of Practice  Working Definition: a group of people (and the social ‘place’ that they collectively create) that relies primarily (though not necessarily exclusively) on networked communication media to communicate and connect  EDUCAUSE VCOP Initiative –  Purpose – Pilot online environments where members can: –Discuss common problems and issues –Share documents, solutions or best practices –Collaborate on projects –Plan for face-to-face meetings; continue relationships beyond face-to-face events

NLII 2002/2003 Key Theme Electronic Portfolios  Working Definition : –Portfolios are collections of work –designed for a specific objective - to provide a record of accomplishments – An electronic portfolio is a PORTFOLIO stored in some kind of electronic container (floppy diskettes, hard disks, CD-ROMs, video tape, DVDs, servers on a LAN or the WWW), combining a variety of electronic technologies (audio, video, graphics, text) –to create and publish a portfolio that most likely will be viewed on a computer or television screen.
