What I will cover  Outcomes of a recent independent survey asking libraries about their role now and in the future  A summary of the key findings  Some possible solutions and ideas to help meet the challenge  Where should we spend our time?  Summary

Independent survey carried out by ICSB  Focussed on the role of the library now and in the future  Over 400 responses ­ 40% Academic in Higher/Further Education ­ 13% Government ­ 12% Corporate ­ 8% Medical ­ 8% Research Institutes ­ 5% Public Libraries ­ 14% others  In most cases respondents had users located over several sites in one Country with only 14% having international spread

Top 3 uses of resources and content provided by the Library  40% Support research as a core activity of the organisation  30% Intellectual development or education of knowledge workers  18% Reference Material

Policy towards print or electronic  55% mixed depending on topic and availability  29% e preferred – always by e if possible  12% print preferred  2% e only – avoid buying any print  2% print only – avoid buying e content

Top 4 challenges users are facing  Desire for remote, instant access  Too much content, need help to find relevant content  Understanding the quality of information through search engines such as Google  Keeping up to date on topics which are of interest to them

What conclusions can we draw from this?  Adding value to Users and Research increases in importance for the future  Discovering relevant content is key to the user experience  Demands continue to grow for  Instant access  Multi device  Any time any place  Improving workflow  Results the Library can help deliver become significantly more important in the future than in the past

Adding value to research

How are your researchers working today?  Most are working through a collaboration, social media platform  They are storing, sharing and annotating key documents  What they are doing is often invisible to you with only a limited view of how content is being used  Yet you are securing the content, the funding and the licence for their work  How can you step in, add value and show the true value of what you are contributing too?

What we’ve heard from our Academic Customers: To avoid: What is happening in the world is bypassing university libraries acc. to Peter Murray-Rust (Chemistry Professor at Cambridge) Introducing MIE Research is done for over 50% in social networks outside the library.* The library’s contribution to students and researchers will be questioned Libraries have to prove their value to the management of the university. Some librarians try to understand how to support research better in their work. Librarians are searching for the right ways and tools to do so, without sacrificing their other responsiblities.
