Group #11 SOCIAL NETWORKING

a website where one connects with those sharing personal or professional interests, place of origin, education at a particular school, etc. via a computer. Definition:

Social network sites are web- based services that allow individuals to construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, articulate a list of other users of whom they share a connection, and view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system Definition Cont’d:

To use a networking website, you need access to the web via a computer, phone, tablet, etc. Some parts of the website need JavaScript to view. Technology Needed?

The costs of building a social networking site is dropping to near zero. Most sites do not cost anything to use. Applications on some websites (ex: Facebook) cost money varying on application. Premium Versions cost money per month or per year. Costs?

Facebook MySpace Twitter LinkedIn Xanga Bebo Google Buzz Hi5 List of Social Networking Websites: *Not all available options, there are many available for different interests, businesses and purposes.

Has basic (free) or premium version ($24.95/mo). Can search jobs and post jobs. Upload resume Join groups you like or involved in Get info about how to use technology and newest information Question other professionals on their opinions. Good for professionals but not for classroom use. LinkedIn

Free Easy to post links, pictures, other sites, applications, and information. Easy to view and navigate around. Good privacy settings. Can put events and “flyers” on website and invite friends to attend. Facebook

Free More used for “social entertainment” than educational. Not recommended for in class learning or professional development. MySpace Showing the “Topics” tab on MySpace: Movies, Celebrities, TV, Comedy, & March Madness

Bebo

Free Pick things you are interested in (news) and then a list pops up of what exactly you want to follow (Tsunami). Students can use it to type short description of what they are learning. Parents can follow the site to see what is going on in class. Can send personal messages to people as means of communication. Twitter

Free. Not as popular in the United States so may not be blocked on school servers. Cannot move around headings but can change background images and text colors. May be easier to use because it doesn’t have as many of the Web 2.0 technology other sites have. Hi5

Free. Easy to use Google’s version of Facebook. Can link to Google Mail with contacts and all apps associated with your account. A lot of schools are starting to use Google as their and other communication system. Can add “scraps” which are links, widgets, photos, podcasts and more. Orkut

How can social networking be used for professional development? Used to aid in meetings where not everyone can be present to the meeting Inform the ones not present of what is happening at the meeting. Get schedules out to members of a group of when meeting times are. Professionals can meet one another to share ideas. Put resume out there for other businesses to see. Connect with other professionals in same area as you.

Why does social networking matter to teaching and learning? Way to communicate with students, parents, and other professionals. Easier access to information. Can show parents what is going on in the classroom. Allows students to use technology for their education. Use it to connect to networks one is a part of and meet others who have same interests. Readily available news, interests, or information (on some)

Uses of Social Networking in the Classroom: Many schools block social networks so there may not be a plausible use of social networks inside the classroom. However a teacher may be able to use the social network outside of school in a professional manner to offer homework and assignment help to students. Can post assignments online to download or as a picture so students who are absent can still have access to homework that day.

Uses of Social Networking in the Classroom cont’d: Can put test dates and when assignments are due so parents and students have it readily available. Students can write on class page about what they are learning. Post pictures of what is going on in class (ex: projects or if a speaker comes in)

Is there a future for social networking in education? YES! But not all social networking sites work well for education.
