A Region That Relies on the Rivers Historically seasons of uncontrolled flooding and drought in the Region Maintain 1,175 navigable river miles 10.5 percent of the total river miles within the USACE 73 million tons of commodities in 2010 Operate and maintain 14 navigation lock projects 9 on the Tennessee River 4 on the Cumberland River 1 on the Clinch River Wilson Lock, AL is highest single lift East of the Rocky Mountains at 100 feet 47,000 lockages in 2010 Key Messages: - The Cumberland River has been an important asset to the region since the founding of Nashville and continues to be. The Corps of Engineers has built the dams on Cumberland that now manage the river and provide for navigation, flood damage reduction, hydropower, water quality and recreation.
