The Early Sedgwick County Township Maps Project Team  Dr. Lorraine Madway, Curator of Special Collections and University Archivist Dr. Lorraine Madway  Mary Nelson, Special Collections Mary Nelson  Sai Deng, Technical Services Sai Deng  Tse-Min Wang, WSU Graduate Student, Computer Science Tse-Min Wang

The Context and Imaging Basics  Some Image Archiving Sites  American Memory form the Library of Congress   Gif or Jpeg; jpeg2000 (use Aware technology), downloadable images; Mr. Sid  Stuckenberg Map Collection at Gettysburg College   Jpeg2000 (in ContentDM)  Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps from University of Utah   Jpeg2000 (in ContentDM)  UIUC Historical Maps Online   Provides two options of viewing the maps: in Mr. Sid and in ContentDM  Maps of Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee   Presented in three formats: Zoomify, Jpeg2000 (in ContentDM), and Mr. SID

The Context and Imaging Basics: Technical Infrastructure, Presentation and Preservation  Imaging software available  Aware Inc. ArchivePack:  Imaging software, build upon Jpeg2000 (an ISO standard);  Includes Aware JPEG2000 Image Server Toolki, JPEG2000 SDK (for image compression, decompression, and formatting), Batch Processor, JPX SDK (to add and remove metadata), and Metadata Editor.  GeoExpress 6.1  Geospatial imaging software, can view both JPEG 2000 and Mr. SID (the industry- standard image compression format);  Requires installing the server side scripts.  ContentDM  Support standards including Jpeg000, Dublin Core 1.1, VRA, XML, HTTP and OAI;  Integrated OCR facilitating full-text search.  LuraWave JP2  Developed by Lura Tech. Support Jpeg2000, and requires image content server;  Lura Tech also has a free plug-in which enables viewing and saving JPEG2000 online:  ActiveX Control for IE (Lura Tech)

The Context and Imaging Basics: Technical Infrastructure, Presentation and Preservation  Other Jpeg 2000 Viewers:  JP2 View: local viewer, free;  Zoomer Image Viewer 4.02E: local viewer, free;  Zoom Image 2.0: limited zoom and pan function; online; has a small site license fee.  Image creation: scanning…  File management: file naming, Access DB, storage…  Delivery  Presentation  File format, compression ratios  Web browser capabilities  Scaling, end user display capabilities…  Digital preservation  Image reliability, metadata, programs  Continued usability of the collection, user interface security

The Early Sedgwick County Township Maps Project  About the map project  Digitized maps of the Early Sedgwick County Townships and introduction materials;  Include survey maps and atlas maps;  Held in Special Collections and University Archives at Wichita State University Libraries.  Project planning  Scanning: outsourcing  Survey maps at 400 dpi, atlas maps at 600 dpi, saved as tiff files originally.

Selecting a Metadata Schema  Image database design and metadata adjustment to comply with the Dublin Core Metadata Standard

Web Delivery  Delivery  Each thumbnail is linked to a large access image providing detailed view;  Microsoft Access database, ASP and XHTML.  Interface design  Homepage

Web Delivery: Search Page

Web Delivery: Browse Survey Maps

Web Delivery: Browse Atlas Maps

Image Management and Presentation Software  Implementation of Zoomify EZ  Software   Zoomify Converter, Zoomify Viewer, Template web page and Quick Start guide  Image conversion  Set the Zoomify image path in the asp file  View zoomed images online

Image Management and Presentation Software  Image zoom page

Jpeg2000 Viewer Test

 ActiveX Control for IE (plug-in, from Lura Tech) was downloaded;  Some tiff files (about 100 to 150 megabytes each) were converted to JPEG2000 format using LuraWave SmartCompress (free, downloaded from Lura Tech website);  the compression rate is 22:1, and the converted files range from 5 to 7 mega byte each;  The converted JPEG2000 files were put online first in the “JPEG 2000 Test” section of the “help” page, and then were added to “browse” page as a link below the thumbnail;  This plug-in has very limited zoom function online, but it allows users to save the file;  Decide not to enable saving of JPEG2000 images due to the copyright concerns.

Jpeg2000 Viewer Test

Other Standards Compliance  XHTML 1.0 strict  CSS 2  Section 508, the Federal Government Accessibility Guideline

Discussion and Issues  Imaging software  Format: tiff, jpeg, jpeg 2000  Metadata: DC, VRA Core  Image presentation and Web delivery  Image preservation  Collaboration  …  Note: the final project website is at:

Thank you!
