Workplace Ethic: What is it and how do I get some?

Objectives: O Define Ethics O Understand the importance of a good work ethic O Learn the six pillars of character O Discover how and why to apply these pillars in the workplace

Ethical Behavior in the Workplace O Workplace ethics: To conform to accepted and especially professional standards of conduct.

Work Ethics O Self Restraint 1. Not doing what you have the power to do. 2. Not doing what you have the right to do. 3. Not doing what you want to do.

Six Pillars of Character 1. Trustworthiness 2. Respect 3. Responsibility 4. Fairness 5. Caring 6. Citizenship

Four Dimensions of Trustworthiness 1. Honesty-involves both what you say (or don’t say) and how you act. In communication it is telling the truth as best you know it and being truthful, genuine, and frank. Honesty in conduct means playing by the rules, without stealing, cheating, or fraud.

Four Dimensions of Trustworthiness 2. Integrity- O Is undivided and complete O Acts according to beliefs O Consistent O What you see is what you get O Knows who s/he is and what s/he values What do we call someone without integrity? A hypocrite or two-faced

Four Dimensions of Trustworthiness O Reliability (Promise Keeping) - means accepting the responsibility to make every reasonable effort to fulfill a commitment. O Avoid bad-faith excuses O Avoid unclear commitments O Avoid unwise commitments

Four Dimensions of Trustworthiness O Loyalty- O Responsibility to promote the interests of certain people, organizations, or affiliations O Requires us to keep some information confidential O Requires us to avoid conflicting interests

Respect O Prohibits violence, humiliation, manipulation, exploitation O Reflects civility, courtesy, decency O Recognizes dignity and the right to make informed choices O Reflects tolerance and acceptance

Responsibility O Being in charge of your choices and your life O Being accountable for what you do and who you are O Doing your best, being diligent, reliable, careful, prepared, and informed O Finishing what you start O Looking for ways to do your work better O Exercising self-restraint

O Involves issues of equality, impartiality, openness, and due process. It implies following a balanced standard of justice without letting one’s feelings interfere. A fair person gets all the information and looks at all sides before making a decision. A fair person makes decisions without favoritism or prejudice. A fair person corrects mistakes promptly and voluntarily. Fairness

O Caring is the heart of ethics and ethical decision-making O Ethics is ultimately about good relations with other people O Caring is being concerned about the welfare of others. Caring

O Includes the attitudes and things we do that define how we should behave as part of a larger community in which you live. O It can also be the business community in which you work. A good citizen does more than his/her “fair” share to make the community work. Citizenship

Work Ethic O How does a person like Will Smith and you find success through a strong work ethic?
