ABOUT OUR STATE California is the most populous state in the nation with 38,802,500 residents. One of every eight U.S. residents lives in California. By 2050, California’s population is projected to reach 50 million people. Wow!

If California were a country, it would be the 36 th largest out of 247. Its population is larger than that of Iraq, Canada, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Uganda, Australia…… so many others

IN 2010  The five most populous counties were Los Angeles County, San Diego County, Orange County, Riverside County, and San Bernardino County, with Riverside County having the largest percentage increase in population.

CALIFORNIA HAS  the largest population of White Americans in the U.S.  the fifth largest population of African Americans  approximately one-third of the nation's Asian Americans  The largest Native American population of any state  the highest total number of Latinos of any state

 More than 10 million Californians are immigrants.  According to 2012 estimates, 27% of Californians (10.3 million) are foreign born—a higher proportion than in any other state OUR IMMIGRANT POPULATION

LEADING COUNTRIES OF ORIGIN  According to 2012 estimates, the leading countries of origin for California immigrants were Mexico (4.3 million), the Philippines (834,000), China (775,000), Vietnam (499,000), El Salvador (418,000), India (383,000), and Korea (347,000). In recent years, almost twice as many immigrants have been arriving from Asia as from Latin America. Some of these numbers are much higher now. In 2010, half of Chinese-born people living in the United States lived either in California or New York.

Least Reached Peoples California is also home to more Unreached People Groups (UPGs) than we have so far been able to map. UPGs are people groups around the world that are less than 2% evangelical.

SOUTH ASIANS  South Asians in California identify as Pakistani, Punjabi, Nepali, Marathi, Kannada, Oriya, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Bihari, Goan, Malayali, Bengali, Bhutanese, Sri Lankan, Sindhi, Awadhi, Kashmiri, and many more. Most of these groups are among the least represented in the Kingdom of God.

WHERE THEY WORSHIP  Many South Asians worship in Hindu, Jain or Buddhist temples, in Sikh gurdwaras, or in mosques. So far, there are very few Baptist churches among South Asians in California.

MUSLIMS.  There are over a million Muslims living in California, and well over 200 mosques. They come from Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, Afghanistan, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, China, and many other places. There are also large numbers of African American Muslims in California. Around 20% of U.S. Muslims live in California.

JUST A FEW OF THE OTHER POPULATIONS IN OUR STATE WHO NEED THE GOSPEL

Agricultural Workers California farmworkers comprised 36 percent of the nation’s farmworkers,— roughly into 648,000 individuals. More than four in ten farmworkers who worked in fruit, vegetable, or horticultural crops was employed in California. Approximately 96% are Spanish speaking.

Prisoners There are113,463 prisoners in California to date. Just 56% of California’s adult male population is nonwhite or Latino (56%), but these groups make up three of every four men in prison. Among adult men, African Americans were incarcerated at a rate of 5,525 per 100,000, compared to 1,146 for Latinos, 671 for non- Latino whites, and 43 for Asians.

Homeless There were136,826 homeless in CA at a recent count, 2/3 of whom were unsheltered.  15% were veterans  13% were recent victims of domestic violence  26% were persons with severe mental illness  37% were persons with chronic substance abuse issues  64% are males

International Students California attracts more international students than any other state—more than 100,000. USC leads the list of colleges for internationals, and UCLA is #6. The fastest growing groups of international students are from China and Saudi Arabia.
