Battle of Appomattox Courthouse On January 9, 1865 General Robert E. Lee’s troops went into battle against General Grant’s troops near Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia There were only 164 casualties for the union in this battle and 500 for the Confederates. Lee agreed to surrender to General Grant However the Civil War ended on April 9th, 1685 it took a while for the word to spread so there was still casualties June 23, 1865 was the final surrender date
