Why is the number 7 so special?

Physics There are 7 SI Base units: Metre, Kilogram, Second, Kelvin, Ampere, Mole and Candela There are 7 colours in the visible light: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet The atmosphere consists of 7 layers: Troposhere, Stratosphere, Ozonosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Exosphere Astronomy There are 7 visible (to the naked eye) stellar objects: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn
For us, Muslims, the number 7 is very significant. We prostrate (sujud) on our 7 bones We circumambulate (tawaf) around the Kaaba 7 times We walk between Safa and Marwah (sa’i) 7 times We stone at Satan (at the Jamarat) 7 times There are 7 gates to Hell Our Prophet s.a.w.said about young children: “Command him to pray upon reaching the age of 7.”
There are 7 Shades provided in the Hereafter We clean (purify) something that is ‘najis’ 7 times The takbir during the ‘Eid prayer (for 1 st raka’at) is made 7 times Allah made the creation of mankind pass through 7 stages Our beloved Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. lived for 63 (7x9) lunar years We are required to say ‘Istighfar’ at least 70 (7x10) times a day
Allah has sent the destructive wind on the people of ‘Aad for 7 consecutive nights The people of Prophet Yusof (a.s.) was tested with 7 years of famine When Allah gave the example of charity, He compared it to a grain (of corn); it grows 7 ears and each ear has a hundred grains Charity is multiplied 700 times There are members of the Muslim Nation who will enter Paradise without questioning
It is a sunnah to perform aqiqah for the new born baby on the 7 th day We are advised by our Prophet s.a.w. to treat our children differently every 7 years of their growth: 1 – 7 : play with them 8 – 14: discipline them 15 – 21: be a friend to them 22 – 28: give them freedom to take action In the war of Badr, there were 77 Muhajirin fighting. It ended with 70 dead among the musyrikin and 70 prisoners of war. Our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. went for Isra’ and Mi’raj on the 27 th day of the 7 th month of the Hijr Calendar.
Code 7 in the Qur’an
The following are observed in the Qur’an: [1]The first surah, Al Fatehah, has 7 verses [2]The first number to be mentioned is 7 [3]The first surah that has a verse for prostration is Surah No. 7 [4]The first kalimah ‘Allah’ mentioned in Surah Al Baqarah is in verse 7 [5]The maximum number that the kalimah ‘Allah’ is mentioned in a verse is 7, in Surah Muzzammil, Verse 20
[6] The 7 th surah counting from surah An-Naas is Surah Al Kautsar. It is the only surah which does not contain any letter “mim” [7]The number of times the 7 heavens are mentioned is 7 and the number of times the phrase “established on His Throne” is also 7 [8]Surah Yasin (the heart of the Qur’an) contains 7 ‘mubin’. The 7 th ‘mubin’ is found at verse 77.
[9] Both Prophet Adam (a.s.) and Prophet Isa (a.s.) are mentioned 25 times. The first time their names are mentioned together in the same verse is at the 7 th time each of their names are mentioned (Surah No. 3, verse 59) “Verily, the likeness of Isa before Allah is the likeness of Adam…”
[10] In Surah Al Kahf the word ‘cave’ is mentioned 7 times. The maximum number of people mentioned is also 7 [11] Surah An-Nahl mentions 7 types of liquids: sperm, water, blood, milk, date juice, grape juice and honey [12] The saga of Prophet Adam (a.s.) and Iblis is mentioned 7 times
[13] The no. of times Allah mentions that He created the heavens and earth in 6 days (period) is 7 [14]The word sabbath is mentioned 7 times (“Sabbath” - abstinences for the Jewish people, is on the seventh day of the week) [15]Prophet Hud (a.s.) is mentioned 7 times. The first time he is mentioned is in Surah No. 7
[16]The Qur’an is made up of all the 28 (7x4) letters of the Arabic alphabet [17]In Surah Al Hijr, Verse 9: “Verily, We, it is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (Qur’an) and surely We will guard it (from corruption).” This verse contains 28 (7 x 4) letters equivalent to the no. of letters of the Arabic alphabet. It starts with an ‘Alif’ and ends with a ‘Nun’ just like in the Qur’an, the first Al Muqattaat letter is ‘Alif” and the last is ‘Nun’. It consists of 7 letter ‘Nun’ suggesting that the Qur’an has a large percentage of its verses ending with letter ‘Nun’.
[18]There are 14 (7x2) Al Muqatta’at (Abbreviation letters) or Futuhat (Introductory letters) eg Alif Lam Mim, Ya Sin, Ta Ha etc [19]These 14 Al Muqatta’at form 14 (7x2) different symbols (spreading over 29 chapters) [20]Of the 14 (7x2) Surahs with the command for prostrations, 7 of them contains Al Muqatta’at. The 7 th is one which begins with “Yaa ayyuhal ladzi na amanu”
[21]There are 7 consecutive chapters that begin with the initials “Ha Mim” (Surah No. 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45 and 46) [22]Only in Surah 42 (7x6), there are 2 sets of Al Muqatta’at in separate verses : Ha Mim and Ain Sin Qaf [23]The surah that has the phrase “wa ma adra kama*” and is answered with the most number of times (i.e. 10 times repeatedly) is Surah Al Mursalat or Surah No 77. In this surah, this question is asked at verse no.14 (7x2) with the last (10 th ) answer is at verse no.49 (7x7)
[24]Between the first surah with “wa ma adra kama” (Surah 69) and the last one (Surah 104), there are exactly 28 (7x4) surahs. [25]The number of surahs that has verses which command for prostrations is 14 (7x2) as agreed by all scholars. However, Imam Syafi’e suggested prostration at Surah Al Hajj, verse 77. As such, this becomes the 7 th verse for prostrations. *: ‘And what will make you know what…’
[26]The last surah that mentions the name “Allah” is surah No. 112 (7x16) [27] Both Surah Al Fatehah & Surah Al Ma’uun consist of 7 verses and have their name spelt with 7 letters. Both of them are related to solat. [28]*Between the first surah that mentions the number 7 (i.e. surah no. 2:29) and the last surah that mentions the number 7 (i.e. surah no.78:12), there are exactly 77 (or 7x11) surahs.
7 Facts of Al Fatehah [1]Its name is spelt with 7 Arabic letters الفاتحه [2] It consists of 7 verses “And indeed, We have bestowed upon you seven of Al Mathani (seven repeatedly recited Verses) and the Grand Qur’an.” (Al Hijr, 15: 87)
[3]It is made up of 21 (7x3) of the letters of the Arabic alphabet ض ص س ر ذ د ح ت ب ا ي و ه ن م ل ك ق غ ع ط [4]As such it does not have 7 letters of the Arabic alphabet ف ظ ش ز خ ج ث ف ظ ش ز خ ج ث
[5]According to some ulama, these letters have connections (initials) with the following names of 7 Hells: [5.1]Thabur [5.2]Jahim or Jahannam [5.3]Kholidin [5.4]Zamharir
[5.5]Fariqoh [5.6]Syaqowah [5.7]Zulmah [6]It contains all the 14 (7x2) of the Al- Muqatta’at letters [7] It has 14 (7x2) ‘syadda’
*The total number of times the letters ‘ ا ’, ‘ ل ’ and ‘ ه ’ forming the name “ الله ” in the entire surah is 49 (7x7)
Wirid after Friday’s prayer While still sitting in “tahiyyah akhir” position, recite the following: Surah Al Fatehah (7x) Surah Al Ikhlas(7x) Surah Al Falaq(7x) Surah An Naas(7x) Then, recite the following doa 4 times:
“Allahumma ya ghaniyyu ya hamid, ya mubdi’u ya mu’id, ya rahimu ya wadud, aghnini bihalalika ‘an haramika wa bitha’atika ‘an ma’shiyatika wa fidhlika ‘amman siwak.” (Some ulama suggested to be read 3 times) The above amalan has been taught by Al Marhum Ustaz Syed Abdillah Al Jufri
Al Mussabba’at (The Seven) To be read before syuruk (after solat subuh) and/or just before magrib This wirid is practised by most ahli sufi like Imam Al Ghazali, Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al Jailani and Imam Syed Abdullah Al Hadad. It is also known as a gift from Nabi Khidir (a.s.) It is also a wirid never missed by Al Marhum Ustaz Syed Abdillah Bin Ahmad Al Jufri
