Developing a Society for Prison Dentists Dr Liana Zoitopoulos Honorary Secretary BASCD

There are 134 prisons At least 134 dentists

BASCD  Mental Health issues  Learning Difficulties  Complex Medical Histories  Drug Addiction  High Treatment Needs

BASCD  Each dentist works in isolation

BASCD  Difficult to meet and discuss issues with other prison dentists

BASCD The advent of CPD has made it necessary to attend courses

BASCD Is there a need for a society?

BASCD BASCD is an independent association of dental public health practitioners and as a specialist society is concerned with dental public health and related subjects. Its members include those who will be providing advice to the PCTs on the future commissioning of dental services, those who supported the implementation of the new contractual arrangements at PCT and SHA level and those who provide clinical and public health dental services to the community.

BASCD Service Development and Delivery Section: Aim  To provide a focus for discussion and debate relating to the development and delivery of services in primary oral health care. This includes the clinical and public health functions of primary care services Chair – Peter Bateman

BASCD Policy Section: Aims 1.To define the Association’s policy on strategic issues in oral health and dental services. 2.To provide both proactive and reactive advice to key decision makers as and when required. Chair – Paul Batchelor

BASCD Information Section: Aims  To provide a focus within the Association for advancing information-linked elements of 3 key objectives set out in the BASCD Constitution: 1. Maintenance of a body with expert knowledge of, and expertise, in dental epidemiology 2. Facilitation of study of the provision of oral health care in the community. 3. Facilitation of relevant aspects of community dental practice. Chair – Nigel Pitts

BASCD Teachers and Research Section: Aim:  The overall function of the Teachers and Research Section is to support the objectives of BASCD by acting as the body of expert opinion to whom Council may turn concerning the development of teaching of dental public health at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Chair – Jenny Gallagher

BASCD Dental Practice Advisers: Aim:  To provide a forum for Dental Practice Advisers, for the development of their role and the promotion of all aspects of advice on Dental Practice to all those bodies requiring it. Chair – Martin Fulford

Prison Dentists: A subsection of Service Development and Delivery Section. Aim:  To provide a forum for prison dentists for the development of their clinical and public health role as well as for peer support. BASCD
