AIR COMPRESSORS & STEAM CLEANERS

Pressurized air is produced by an air compressor. Air compressors are used daily in automotive shops. They are used to inflate tires. They are also used for tools, like impact wrenches. AIR COMPRESSORS

It is important to understand how an air compressor works so that equipment malfunctions can be solved. The air compressor consists of three major parts. The electric motor, the air pump, and storage tank.

The electric motor drives the air pump. The pump sends air to the storage tank where it is held for later use. The pump turns on when the storage tank gets low, so the compressor will keep a constant pressure of air.

PSI = POUNDS PER SQUARE INCH or the measure of air pressure or force delivered by the compressor. The Volume (MEASURED IN CFM) REQUIRED - DETERMINES THE SIZE OF AIR COMPRESSOR NEEDED TO DO THE JOB. CFM or Cubic Feet Per Minute is the volume of air measuring the compressors capabilities.

The great advantage of compressed air is the high ration of power to weight or power to volume. In comparing electric motors, compressed air produces smooth translation with much more uniform force. Compressed air equipment can be more economical and more durable.

AIR COMPRESSOR MAINTENANCE & SAFETY Drain the water out of the storage tank daily by opening the drain valve in the bottom of the tank. Also drain the water out of the line daily. Check the oil level in the automatic lubricator weekly. Check the oil level in the pump weekly. Refill as needed. The belts need to be checked on a monthly basis, and replaced as needed. Always wear safety glasses when using the air compressor for anything.

STEAM CLEANERS The kerosene-fired steam cleaner is the best piece of equipment to use for cleaning engines and large assemblies.

Kerosene is burned and heats water until it is turned into high pressure steam. A spray of hot steam mixed with soap is used to remove grease from engines. The steam cleaner is a very dangerous piece of equipment. Flying debris can cause burns and injuries.

Steam cleaner safety Gloves and safety glasses are a must. A full face shield is recommend Safety glasses prevent the flying debris from entering your eyes.

Steam Cleaner Rules Never point the steam cleaner at anyone. Always be sure the steam hose is secured before turning on the steam flow. Always make sure the water is turned on before running the steam cleaner. A long sleeve shirt should also be used to protect all the skin. Always wear protective gear. Always check the steam cleaner for leaks in hoses, and malfunctions.
