“Farewell to the Old Guard” Will Gustaveson

Speaker: Napoleon Bonaparte Born on the island of Corsica on August 15, 1769 Died May 5, 1821 Reign May 1804- April 1814, March 1815- June 1815 Won about 60 battles and seized control of nearly all of Europe before being defeated.

Occasion Occurred April 20, 1814 Saying goodbye to the Old Guard After the failed invasion of Russia and defeat by allies

Audience Speaking directly to his fellow soldiers

Purpose Praising officers for their courage Thanking and saying goodbye as Napoleon leaves his position Encourages them to continue to serve France “Do not regret my fate…” Meaning do not pity him because he had to step down.

Tone Proud Encouraging Appreciative Humble

Rhetorical Device Ethos Pathos Logos Napoleon served his soldiers and everything he did was for them. “Do not regret my fate; if I have consented to survive, it is to serve your glory.” Pathos “Would I could press you all to my heart.” Napoleon is stating that he cares about every single one of his men Logos Served the military for 20 years.
