A. P AUL ’ S C OUNSEL TO T HE E LDERS OF THE C HURCH. Acts 20:17, 28 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church. 1.Their Calling and Character – Which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers20:28 a.Their Eminence –Cf. I Tim. 3:1 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. b. Their Enablement – Which the Holy Ghost hath made you 20:28 c. Their Esteem - I Thes. 5:12, ESV; Heb. 13:17 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you. Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

They are Superintendents (episkopos = overseers; a superintendent, i.e. bishop, overseer.)

The Communication and Communion:20:20, 21, 31 a.Its Character: And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, testifying i."Showed" announced = to Rehearsed, Reported.20:20 ii."taught" (didaskō) = instructed.20:20 iii."testifying" (diamartyromai) = to witness from "martyr." 20:21 iv."Warn" (noutheteō) = to admonish, Reprove.20:31 Therefore watch, and Remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

None of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my coursecf. II Tim. 4:7

6. The Continuation and Compassion of his ministry. a. That by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day20:31 b. I ceased not to warn everyone... with tears.20:31 7. The Communication of the Gospel: (a) preach (v. 20), proclaim (v. 27) (from anangellō = announce) (b) taught (from didaskō = "teach," v. 20); (c) declared (v. 21, 26), testifying (v. 24), from diamartyromai = "solemnly bear witness to" 8. His Clear Conscience: a. I am pure from the blood of all men.20:26 b. I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel20:33 c. Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities20:34

C. P AUL ’ S E XHORTATION TO THE E LDERS AND THE C HURCH.Acts 20:28-32, 35 1.The Caution Concerning false teachers.20:29-31 After my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock, also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch… a.Their Purpose – draw away disciples after them b.The Period – after my departing c.The People under Pretense – i.From Outside: grievous wolves enter in among you ii.From Inside: also of your own selves shall men arise d. The Precaution – I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears28:31

The Caution Concerning false teachers.20: The Care for the Elders.20:32 I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
