Self Respect EQ: How can you develop self respect?

Self-Respect Self-respect – Having high regard for oneself People who behave in responsible ways have self respect. Do you have self respect?? How do you develop self respect??

How do you develop self-respect? Make a character check Control the belief statements that motivate you. Choose actions that promote self-respect.

Character Check Write the answers to these questions in your notebook. Are you proud of your actions? Do your actions reflect responsible values? Throughout life you must make checks of your character in your notebook… Make a list of responsible values… Write yes if your actions reflect these values. If your actions do not reflect the values you listed, write how you can change your actions.

Control belief statements that motivate you You may have good character and act in ways that reflect responsible values, but still lack self-respect. Do not internalize negative belief statements. Example: “I will fail no matter how hard I try.” You control the belief statements that play in your mind. Keep your belief statements positive. Example: “All I can do is my best.”

Chose actions that promote self-respect Do you respect yourself? Do you expect others to respect you? Is there truth to saying actions speak louder than words? What types of actions promote self-respect?  Brainstorm some actions that promote self respect.

Actions that promote self-respect Pay attention to your appearance  Being well-groomed is one of the first indicators of self- respect. Make a list of your responsible actions and review the list often  Knowing your actions are responsible helps keep you from getting down on yourself. Be a friend to yourself by enjoying activities by yourself  Take time to get in touch with your thoughts and feelings.

Actions that promote self-respect Write your feelings in a journal  Writing about feelings is a good way to examine what is happening in your life. Make spending time with members of your family or a mentor a priority  Keep people around who keep you positive Care for other people the way you would like them to care for you

Actions that promote self-respect Let other people know what helps you feel special  Example – are you a birthday person? Support the interests of family members and friends and ask them to support your interests  Attend activities that your friends and family members value

Actions that promote self-respect Ask family members and friends which of your actions show you have character  Take constructive criticism and use it in a positive way Get plenty of exercise to generate feelings of well-being  Regular exercise creates a feeling of well-being by improving your health, fitness level and flexibility.

Self-Respect FYI Students may behave in self-destructive ways because they have little self-respect. They may be living in an abusive family, or they may be struggling in school because of an undiagnosed learning disability. Remember actions speak louder than words.

Developing Good Character 5 min check 1. Name the seven building blocks for good character. 2. What is delayed gratification? 3. Why is it important to have self-respect? 4.
