Illinois History Illinois is a state in the United States of America. A state is a smaller area of land that has borders. There are 50 states that make up our country.

Illinois History Way back when our country was being formed, a large area of land was called a territory. Once the territory decided to join the Union, it became a state. We call this statehood.
