eduphoria! Forethought Teacher Training: Module 1

These are the things teachers have said they need and want for curriculum: consistent curriculum formats, aligned, appropriate scope and sequence and resources, a USER-FRIENDLY SYSTEM

consistent format user-friendly all in the same system Forethought consistent format web-based Lesson planner share lesson plans team plan/ collaborate all in the same system user-friendly “Forethought is going to address your curriculum and lesson planning concerns and needs.”

Enter Tomorrowland Here Show video to introduce the extended metaphor. The Bumper Cars represent the “old way” where teachers are headed in lots of different directions without clear focus on an agreed upon finish line. Now, with an aligned system, we are on track. There is wiggle room to either side of the track, representing purposeful variation, but the finish line is clear and there is lots of support along the way. Enter Tomorrowland Here

Forethought for Teachers: Module 1 Objectives The Roadmap: Planning for Learning – the elements of a good lesson plan and driving the Tomorrow Land Speedway The Auto Show: Forethought – the race track and steering The Test Drive: Navigating the System– create your planner, how to plan for learning in Forethought, and sharing the road with a friend or a team The Owner’s Manual: Features and How-To - help documents, resources, and the Birdville Eduphoria website These are our objectives for today.

Planning for learning: Common Lesson Plan Template Misconceptions “if you are sitting beside a traffic cone with a road sign, please popcorn out and read it to the group. These are definite misconceptions about the roadmap we will use to create lesson plans in eduphoria Forethought and today we are going to put your mind at ease.”

Planning for learning: the components of effective lesson design “So what are the components of effective lesson design?” In groups of 2 or 3, ask teachers to brainstorm the components of effective lesson design, record ideas on a race car, and post on track. Discuss together and lead participants to identify these components: Standards Structures/Strategies Lesson Procedure Accommodations/modifications/extensions Assessing for Learning Resources Notes and Reflections

Planning for learning: the components of effective lesson design Standards/TEKS Structures and Strategies Procedures Accommodations/Modifications Extensions Resources Assessment Notes/Reflections “The elements you have identified are the Roadmap we must use as we design and plan for effective teaching and learning.” Objective 1: The Roadmap: planning for learning

Common Elements of the forethought Lesson plan template Content Standard(s)/Process Standards Your rail tracks. A defined course and the ride controls the pace. Content Area Standards/TEKS and Process Standards: “These are what we all use to design learning at the appropriate level (Content, Cognition, Context).” “You can adjust your pace, but everyone needs to reach the destination and finish line together.”

Procedure, Strategies, and Structures Driving with Common Elements Lesson plan template – You steer and control your car! Procedure, Strategies, and Structures You steer your car and make decisions about how you will make your way around the track. You can steer left to right or look at street signs and the landscape. However, you must make sure that your steering appropriately addresses the destination and doesn’t jump the rail tracks (the Standards) Procedure, Strategies, and Structures: “We use the standards to define our destination, YOU are the expert and the one who decides HOW you will guide your students to the finish line.”

Accommodations, Modifications, Extensions Driving with Common Elements Lesson plan template – You steer and control your car! Accommodations, Modifications, Extensions You consider the destination and who is in the car with you. You make decisions about their needs during the trip and what you will do to accommodate those needs. Accommodations/Modifications/Extensions: “Again, YOU are the expert who knows your passengers and their individual needs.”

Common Elements of the forethought Lesson plan template Resources Your teaching tools. Consistent across the district and are aligned to your Standards. Resources: “The district will provide you with required resources and teaching tools for every standard, but you may also choose additional approved resources available to you.”

Driving with Common Elements Lesson plan template Assessment Regular Maintenance and State Inspections to make sure all parts of your car are functioning properly. Sample assessment items you can use to design your own assessments and to make sure the level of instruction matches the cognitive rigor of the Standards. Assessment: Ultimately, there will be at least one assessment item for every SE. In the meantime, there will be sufficient examples so that you can create appropriate assessments that met the rigor of the standard.

Driving with Common Elements Lesson plan template – You steer and control your car! Notes/Reflections Your road trip photos and travel journal. You can add important information before departure or reflect on your trip. What parts of your trip went well and what might you do differently next year to make your journey even better? Notes/Reflections: “This is a place where you can record special information for your trip (lesson) or note what went well or what you might want to do differently next time.” Our Road Trip

your Forethought Roadmap Lesson Plan Template The Standards/TEKS Checklist to choose your Structures, Strategies, and Assessment Methods Your lesson Procedures and places for Accommodations and Notes/Reflections “Our Roadmap. This is our Forethought Lesson Plan Template, which includes all of the elements we identified.” Resources

Objective 2: The Auto Show: steering on the Forethought race track So now think about the bumper cars vs. the cars on the track. We can begin to see that if we all are “on that same track and include the effective elements of planning for learning that you identified, we can create a journey where we all reach the finish line and win the race.” Objective 2: The Auto Show: steering on the Forethought race track

Birdville Eduphoria Forethought Demo: Login to Eduphoria (sketchersid, 010585). Show examples of 3 courses and the various levels of curriculum content. Science grade 5: “This is the fully-loaded, Luxury model – the Audi A8– this is the destination for all BISD courses in the next 3-5 years.” World Geography: “This is the Camry – a great intermediate model. The TEKS are bundled into 6 week units and resources are included in this package.” 6th Science: “This is the Nissan Versa – a great base model car. All of the TEKS are in the course, but not bundled in 6 weeks yet.” Presenter: Leave forethought open (minimize) for later. Birdville Eduphoria Forethought

Setting Up Your planner (see Handout One) Before setting up a planner, direct teachers to Handout One, which explains schedule types and entries. Go over Handout One together and ask participants, “Think about your day, maybe even jot down all of your different classes, or special entries.” Before you create your Forethought planner, you will want to spend a few minutes to think about how your schedule.

Setting Up Your planner “We will follow these steps in the wizard to create your lesson planner by creating a schedule with courses (and special events, if needed). The directions on the screen will help you through the processes of creating a customized planner. Click Next.” The first time you login, the Set Up My Planner Wizard will appear. This will guide you through the process of setting up your schedule of courses.

Setup my planner wizard Enter the name of your schedule (see Suggestion on the screen). Teachers who teach A/B days, will need to set up 2 schedules, so they might want to add “A” to the title of the first schedule. If you have another type of special schedule, please see your Consultant or ITS for assistance. Enter the name of your schedule. Suggestion: Name, School, School Year Click Next.

Adding Entries – These are Your preps, subjects, or “boxes in the Lesson Plan book” This screen allows you to add, edit and organize the entries in your schedule. Add Entry: Create a course with learning standards, mirrored course, or special entry Edit Entry: Modify information about a selected entry Move Up/Move Down: Change the order of a selected entry in your schedule Remove Entry: Removes a course from your schedule “Note that schedules are not set in stone. They can be modified, or even deleted, if your schedule changes next school year.” Everyone choose a course with standards. Click “Add an Entry”

Entry Type Select “A course with Learning Standards” “This screen allows you to set up a block of time in your schedule. Note the types of entries that we talked about earlier.” – Select “A course with Learning Standards” This is a typical course/class/prep in your schedule.

Select your course from the district Course Tree See participant instructions above. Click on your level. Click on your subject or grade until the appropriate course is shown. Click on the course name.

Edit the Name of the Entry On this screen it gives you the option to give your entry a unique name. After you receive your final schedule in August you can edit your course titles, re-order courses, or add and delete. This is a great place to add times, period numbers, etc. (if you would like) to help organize the entries.

Add new Entry to your schedule Repeat as needed for the number of entries in your schedule. When your schedule is complete, click Next.

Special Course Entries Mirrored Course Allows you to show the same content several times in your schedule. If you need to change something in one class for a day, it will no longer mirror for that day. Special Entry Can be any non-academic entry (Lunch, Planning Period, Recess etc.) When you add another entry to your schedule, you will have a choice of these options + another course with Standards.

Finishing your lesson planner When prompted, to add another SCHEDULE, choose “NO” unless you have a A/B schedule. Click “Begin Using Forethought” Only teachers who have A/B days, or special assignments, will choose Yes to add another schedule.

Creating a lesson in Forethought – The Components (See handout 2) Have participants refer to Handout #2. Have them click and explore the various components of the lesson planner to become acquainted with its parts and how to create a lesson. Point out how to add standards, resources, clarifiers, strategy box, the paperclip for attachments

Refer teachers to page 2 of Handout 2.

Team Planner (handout 3) Please see Handout 3 for detailed instructions for creating a Team Planner. Handout 3 will give Teachers step-by-step instructions for creating their team planner when you know who is on your team in August.
