Interview With an Engineer Principles of Engineering By: Olivia Newton

Personal Information Jodie DeHart Cosmetologist Self-Employed 1731 Parrish Plaza Dr. Apt. A Years

Interview Questions Describe the duties and responsibilities of someone working in chemical engineering. ◦What are some specific jobs in this field? What is your specialty in engineering? “I am a cosmetologist and work with beauty.” What are some of the projects you’ve worked on? I work on hair, nails, makeup, and skin.

Interview Questions How lengthy are your usual projects? “One-four hours” How much of your time is spent on the computer? “none” Does your job deal mainly with people, data or things? “It deals with people.” Are there any specific tools or equipment required for your job? “You have to work with things such as brushes, foils, hair color, nail polish, nail filers, & makeup.”

Interview Questions What are the advantages of this occupation? Are there any disadvantages? How about advancement opportunities? Are employers evenly distributed or are they concentrated in certain areas of the country?

Interview Questions Do most people work for themselves, private industry, or the government? “Most people work for themselves, but few people work for a private industry.” What are the beginning, average, and top pay one could expect to earn working in chemical engineering? “It depends on what your chosen job is. I made between $15,000 and $25,000 a year.” Does where you live make a difference in your salary? “It mainly just depends on your cliental and who has a lot of money to spend on their appearance.” Are there any fringe benefits? “No.”

Interview Questions Is there overtime pay? “No.” How many hours do you work per week? “Usually Tuesday-Saturday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.” What about vacations? “You take off when you want to. If you are self employed, it doesn’t matter. But, if you work for a business, such as a salon, you have to inform the owner.” Is there further education offered where you work? “No, you just need your cosmetology license and high school diploma to be eligible to work as a cosmetologist. Do you have to travel? “You don’t have to, but some people do, depending on who they are working on.”

Interview Questions What are the retirement benefits? “You just end up with the money you made over the years.” In what kind of environment is the work done? Indoors? Outdoors? “You are indoors at all times.” Is it possible to work at home (like if you’re sick)? “No, it isn’t. You cannot work on somebody’s personal appearance if you are sick, because you have to touch them.” Do you work alone or with other people? “You usually work alone, unless you are being assisted.”

Interview Questions Were there any tests or licenses you had to get before you became an engineer? “You have to get your cosmetology license, if you live in Kentucky, you have to take two tests in Frankfort.” What is your most satisfying experience so far? “My most satisfying experience is doing my makeup, going to California on business, and having the paparazzi follow me, mistaking me for Pamela Anderson.” Is this what you thought you were going to do in high school? “Yes, I always wanted to work with beauty.” How about in college? “I went to college specifically for cosmetology, which was a cosmetology college. So obviously, yes.”

Interview Questions What degree did you get in college? “I earned the job title, and a diploma for becoming an official cosmetologist.” How long have you worked in your profession? “Ten years and licensed in two states.” Do you know anything about the employment opportunities for people my age? “You have to graduate high school, at least, and have at least two years of college before you can work in this field.” Do you have any advice for someone looking to go into chemical engineering? “If you are interested in beauty, I would definitely go into that field. If you are wanting a job only for the money, I’d go to college for something else.

Interview Questions Is there anything else you would like to add? “Stay in school!” Be sure to thank the engineer for his/her time!
