Culinary Arts By: JoHanna Loar

History and Background The chef was the master of all slaves, cooks, and servants at close hand in their work environment. Culinary arts has been a relevant profession for many decades. Chefs originated in Ancient Greece (Most chefs and cooks were slaves). During the Italian Renaissance, the culinary influence was widened.

History and Background In the middle of the 18th Century is when the first professional chef went public. The Marriage of Henry IV and Catherine de Medici introduced France to culinary arts from the Italian Renaissance.

Career Requirements Education: High school diploma or equivalent No college major or degree is required Dorsey Culinary Academy and Michigan Culinary School offers culinary programs Some jobs related to culinary arts would be: restaurant management, food and beverage controller, food writers and food critics, as well as food stylists/photographers. Some good skills to have while in a culinary career are: food handling, proper clean up, patience, communication skills, and cash handling.

Chefs Job Description Chefs would be responsible for directing kitchen workers, menu planning, recipe creation, food and supply ordering, along with specific cooking duties.

Cooks Job Description Cooks would be responsible for day to day food prep. Many times there are different cooks for each different part of a menu or food.

Food Preparation Workers Job Description Food Preparation Workers tend to work under supervision of chefs and cooks, most often they perform less duties. typical duties for food prep workers would be making salads, cutting meat and vegetables, and preparing materials for chefs and cooks.

Reflection Time!!! The most challenging thing about this career for me would be figuring out where to start. Positive perks would be that I would be allowed to expand my knowledge on culinary arts along with doing something that I love. The latest job market reading for culinary arts was in 2010. 100,600 chefs and cooks were employed. Pizza Hut, Olive Gardens, Red Robins are hiring :) While the workers are cooking an preparing things, every one else gets to sit back, relax, and enjoy a delicious meal.

Conclusion :) Why is this career important/necessary in our society? Would this career be a good one for you? Why or why not? This career is important to our society because there are many things that people can do with food. Many restaurants donate to the poor and homeless. This career would be a good choice for me because culinary arts is my passion, I love working with food and spend every minute I can helping with cooking and setting up meals.
