2008 Washington City/County Management Association Summer Conference Land Use Planning and Environmental Sustainability Chicago Chicago was chosen as a winner of the first annual Urban Land Institute/Financial Times Sustainable Cities Award  Chicago has more green-roof projects than most cities in the world, with more than 450 projects in various stages of development that total over 4.5 million square feet.  More than 260 building permits issued through the green permitting process.  Chicago also has the largest number of LEED projects in the United States with 210 LEED-registered or -certified buildings.  A total of 26 green alleys have been constructed and 40 are scheduled to be built in 2008.
