Summary of the Book. I read the book Home of the Brave. In this story there is a young boy named Kek. He lives in Africa. Kek used to live with his mother, father and brother, but his father and brother died. They can't find his mother. He now lives in Minnesota with his aunt and cousins. He was sent here because of the war going on in Africa.

How does it relate to the story? In the story Kek meets a friend named Lou. She has a cow and can’t manage to take care of it. He is sad to see the cow in such poor condition. Later Kek takes the cow to take care of because Lou can’t. The country Kek is from cow’s are very sacred.

About Dinka. The culture that cherishes cows are called Dinka people. The Dinka is an ethnic group in South Sudan and is one of the largest groups. The Dinka are a group of several closely related peoples living along both sides of the White Nile. Their culture is made up of about 1 million people. In Dinka cow is said as weng. Due to Civil war, Dinka have migrated to Kenya, Uganda, Europe, and the United States.

Why are they sacred? Cows are sacred in Africa because the Dinka people are given cows as gifts. When Dinka’s get married, cows are given to the bride’s family as a gift. When a Dinka child is born, they are given a nickname after they’re favorite cow’s color. A Dinka’s wealth is measured by the number of the cows in their possession.

Facts.  Cows drink about a bathtub full of water and eat around 40 pounds of food a day.  Cows have 32 teeth.  Cows can live 25 years. You can guess the age of a cow that has horns by counting the number of rings on the horns.  A cow weighs about 1400lbs.  In a lifetime a Dairy cow can supply 200,000 glasses of milk.
