The Tower of London London’s oldest building. Since it was built by William the Conqueror in the 11 th century, this castle has been a royal palace, a prison, a place of execution, a zoo, the Royal Mint and an observatory. Today it’s a museum and houses the Crown Jewels.

The Houses of Parliament The Houses of Parliament is the home of British government. The Houses of Parliament sits in Westminster Palace. It was built in 1840.

Big Ben Big Ben is the symbol of London. It is a clock tower 316 feet high (95m). It’s situated in Saint Stephens Tower of the Houses of Parliament. It is called after Sir Benjamin Hall who rebuilt it. The great clock was installed in the Tower in 1858.

Downing Street Number 10 Downing Street has been the home of the British Prime Minister since 1735.

Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is the home of the Queen. The Queen’s Gallery houses paintings, drawings and furniture from the royal collection.

The Natural History Museum Situated in Kensington. One of London’s greatest museums. A huge collection of animals and plants, including a quarter of a million butterflies, a blue whale and the famous dinosaur skeletons.

London Bridge There are 14 bridges across the Thames in London. Tower Bridge is the only Thames bridge which can be raised when big ships come up to the bridge.

Madame Tussauds This famous waxworks has models of famous people from pop stars to prime ministers. Displays of battles and Chamber of Horrors.

Westminster Abbey It was built in the 11 th century. Many kings, queens and famous people were buried and crowned there.

St Paul’s Cathedral It was built between 1675 and 1710 by Sir Christopher Wren. It is the fifth church put on the same site. It is 111 m high.

Trafalgar Square The Square was named to commemorate Admiral Nelson’s naval victory over the French at the battle of Trafalgar in It is a place where people meet and a traditional place of political demonstrations.

British Museum The British Museum founded in 1753, houses the works of man from prehistoric times to the present day. The British Library is housed within the British Museum.

Hyde Park In Hyde Park every weekend you can listen to people making speeches at the Speaker’s Corner. Anyone has the right to speak here.

Piccadilly Circus It is a large round square and a meeting point of six streets. There is a statue of Eros in the middle of the square. The steps of the statue are the favourite place of young people in London.
