Web Quest: An exploration of The Roaring 20’s! By Jessica Adorno

Introduction: Help Wanted! I am seeking help to throw the biggest, most extravagant, new age party of the century! Your job is to help the Principal plan and throw a party taking place in the 1920’s for his daughters birthday party. He needs every last detail planned out for him and he is not a man you want to upset! She would like to have a roaring 20’s themed party and they need help from our class making sure every detail is perfect to the last sparkling flapper head band!

Task Our class has been learning about the historical, cultural and, political events of the Roaring 20’s. Your job is to help our school Principal plan a party to impress his daughter and all of her bootlegger pals and flapper ladies. Make sure he knows what music to play, what art should be hung up, what legal issues he might have and anything else to help him have the perfect night. Your presentation will include a detailed layout of your party plans including pictures, on a power point presentation.

The Process Part 1: Entertainment Please watch the following videos and write a small summary of each cartoon (who looked like the main character, actions, setting) in your summary reflect on if this is appropriate to show at a Roaring 20’s theme party and why, pick your 3 favorite to suggest to the Principal to show at his daughters party! Steam Boat Willie Plane Crazy Silly Symphony: The Skeleton Dance Haunted House Alice’s Wonderland

The Process Part 2: Song and Dance! Buddy up for this section because you are going to need a dance partner! Use youtube to familiarize yourself with the music of one of the famous Harlem Renaissance artists or another musical artists that was popular at this time. Some examples are Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Jimmie Rodgers and, Bessie Smith. Then after find a dance move that would have been done to one of these jazzy tunes (The Charleston, the Lindy Hop) get together with a partner to practice and show to our Principal! (Yes, you will be dancing for the Principal, this will all be done during class time.)

The Process Part 3: Attire Pick either a flapper headband or a gangsters tie to help make costumes for the party. Click below on the links to a do it yourself craft for one of the roaring 20’s accessories and get crafting! If you would like extra credit take a picture of yourself wearing your chosen accessory and add it to your final presentation! (materials will be provided in class) Flapper Head Band Gangster’s Tie

The Process Part 4: Good Eats! Pick from the menu below three 20’s themed food and find recipes for them. Present your findings to the Principal and see if he approves of your menu Rice Pudding Barbeque Sauce Tea Sandwiches Melon Balls Stuffed Mushrooms Feel Free to find any other food options!

The Process Part 5: Party Guests Surprise!!! You just got an in with one of the Roaring 20’s hottest social life members, but who is it? Invite one famous individual to the party and write an argument why they would be the life of the party! This can be anyone from an artists, a musician, an athlete, an actor or even a politician! Your argument must be very convincing and be one page long double spaced.

Evaluation Have I been checking in with my teacher after every activity and ask questions when confused? Have I been working as a team member with others and staying on task? Have I been putting in %110 of my effort? Have I shown proof of my work and dedicated quality time to each activity? Have I come up with a clear plan and presentation to plan the craziest roaring 20’s party? If you said yes to all of these you are a star student and your grade will reflect this. Remember though this activity is about thinking outside of the box and applying classroom knowledge to a creative thinking process so have fun!

Conclusions To conclude this project the class will be presenting their party planning findings in a power point presentation For each task you complete you should have a slide explaining your process and end result For group/ partner work explain your role and what you learned from the other person Make sure to include pictures of your process
