Were women supposed to smoke and drink in the 20s? The whole goal for rebelioius women in the 20s was to show the men that they were equal, men smoked & drank. So did women. Smoking was considered a dirty habit and smoking by women was seriously frowned upon by society.

Flappers mostly did this to prove that women were equal to men. Later cigarettes were advertised to women as a sign of modern sophistication.

What were women exected to do during or after WW1? "With so many men going off to war the employment gap was so scarce that ladies started take there place." "They could now do more than just stay at home and clean and cook they could now work in the world"

"The Women's Royal Air Force was created, which is where women worked on planes as mechanics. "

What did flappers look like? The basic look of a flapper would be: Short hair, ear length. short hemlines to knee or above. straight shapeless dresses covered in fringe or beads. were often seen with ciggerets which were smoked in long holders.

FLAPPERS? Flappers: a weird name given to trendy young women in the 1920's. When people think flapper, they think short bobbed hair, stockings, knee-length dresses, heavy make-up, a garter, and long beaded necklaces (The Flapper.., 2). Most are found with a cigarette in hand. They're typically linked with rebellious attitudes, sailor mouths, jazz music, and free partying. This sudden "type" of woman began when people started to inherit or live with the traits ands looks of movie characters and sports stars (The Flappers.., 1).

WOMEN WHO WORKED IN THE 1920's In the 1920's, women would be considered "new woman." Changes were being made in government, politics, schools, many even their home life (Benner, 1). A lot of people looked at woman as less than men. They had just been given the right to vote. Also, people thought married woman shouldn't work (Benner, 2). They were kind of limited to being "mill girls" and doing housework (Women's Rights, 6). But in this decade, women started to rise. More of them began to perform work in offices as a receptionist or bookkeeper. Others found work in department or fashion stores (Women's Rights, 25).

MARRIAGE or DATING? Beginning in 1920, things started to get more and more informal. Yes, marriage was a big deal. But with the "flapper vibe" going around, having fun was a big thing. For the first time, chaperones were not attending dates. There was much more privacy between two people which of course resulted in much more intimacy, that was pretty much petting, or feeling up, one another. (Dating, Mating, and..., p2) The focus in relationships was more success and popularity rather than emotions. Guys treated girls to a good time that required spending money. No commitment required. (Dating, p6).

Why were flappers so different from normal, respected women? They wanted to go against what was considered lady-like, so they drank, smoked, and dressed different to be more like men. ( par 1)

Did the number of divorces or marriages change in the 20's. Marriage rates were at 99 for every 1,000 single women.( en.org, par. 2.) The divorce rate has mostly risen.( par. 6.)

How were women treated in the 1920's? During the war, women had won the right to vote. Even though they had the right to vote, there was still sexist barriers all around. Some examples are, the men were the only ones who had bathroom to change in, so the women had to adapt to those working conditions, therefor the women organized protests. Women in the 1920'. Did women have rights in the 1920's? although it may not seem as if they had rights they did, and they were starting to get more. in the 1920's, the women gained thee right to vote. Later on this would lead to the women's right movement. Women of the century. August 30th es/womenofthecentury/decadebydecade/1920s.html Women of the century. Basics of Women & Marriage In the 1920s women were realizing that they can do just as much if not more than men. with so many people disagreeing with the idea of womens jobs and responabilites changing, many women felt he need to take charge and prove a point. Also, with the realization of not needing a man to provide for them, the need to get married decreased while the rate of dating increased.
