 Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder where people can’t control their thoughts, feelings, ideas, obsessions, behaviors, etc. which leads them to do something. (compulsive)  It’s also been found to affect animals and how they act when in certain situations.

 Been around for thousands of years  Started being described 100 years ago  Sudden focus on mental illnesses  1-3% of people in the U.S have it = 2/3 million  1 in 50 people have it

 Genetic ( DNA) it can be passed down  Brain circuit that regulates our behavior is activated  Personal thoughts  Stress These are all theories and really haven’t been proven by science.

 Obsessions/ compulsions that aren’t caused by drugs/medical illness These include:  Fears  Excessive focus on certain things  Repetition  Arranging things ALL the time  Hoarding

 Many medical and psychological tests  Physical exams  Laboratory tests  Psychological evaluation  Repetitive behaviors  Person acknowledges they have a problem  Persistent thoughts

 Jessica Alba  David Beckham  Penelope Cruz  Cameron Diaz  Leonardo DiCaprio  Michael Jackson  Katy Perry  Justin Timberlake

 There’s no real cure  Take anti-depressants to keep compulsions under control  Therapy  Talking to psychiatrist, psychologist, counselor, etc.  Help you with how to deal with problems

 OCD is a functional disorder because it’s in the person’s head. There is nothing physically wrong with them it’s how they deal with a problem in their life or how they express their stress.
