John Proctor

 According to the 2011 U.S. Census Bureau: ◦ 3.5 million nurses employed ◦ Of the 3.5 million:  3.2 million are female  330,000 are male What differences do male nurses experience in such a female dominated profession?

 Masculinity and femininity are two separate beings  Contributes to the homosexual stereotypes of male nurses from the public

 Greg is criticized by Jack Brynes for his career choice due to his belief that Nursing is unmanly  Common stereotype: Greg failed in school, and he had to accept the secondary choice of being a nurse rather than a doctor.

 Hung Hsin has had many positive experiences, but “...there have been jokes thrown around about [him] being a nurse and the movie Meet the Parents didn’t help” (Santiago).  Mark Andaya believes that “... [he] has became more sympathetic to those who overcome stereotypes of any kind” (Santiago).

 According to 2011 U.S. Census Bureau:  Male Nurses ◦ $60,700 per year  Female Nurses ◦ $51,000 per year BUT WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

 “Glass Escalator Effect” ◦ Women: Using natural abilities in nursing, inherently suited for profession ◦ Men: No natural abilities, higher paid due to more skill than just natural abilities

 Paul Ehasz ◦ The strength of men is very helpful in the workplace because “the female nurses like a male on the floor to help with lifting patients.” ◦ Ehasz has experience where “the strength of a male nurse is beneficial in times for security purposes when patients become unruly in times under pressure.”

 Gender plays a huge role in medical field  More males entering nursing: ◦ Effects on female patients ◦ Effects on male patients  Males can have caring traits and society needs to realize it and accept it
