SNMP Importance Why SNMP is Important in today’s SCADA systems

SNMP Key Components Three key components: Managed devices (network elements) - Network node that contains an SNMP agent and that resides on a managed network. Managed devices collect and store management information and make this information available to NMSs using SNMP. Managed devices, sometimes called network elements, can be routers and access servers, switches and bridges, hubs, computer hosts, or printers Agents - Network-management software module that resides in a managed device. An agent has local knowledge of management information and translates that information into a form compatible with SNMP. Network-management system (NMS) - An NMS executes applications that monitor and control managed devices. One or more NMSs must exist on any managed network.

SNMP Protocol - OIDs OID – Object Identifier The “OPC Tagname” in the IT World Each Object (piece of information) is identified by a series of numbers Unique definition Cisco (9) Enterprise (1) Private (4) Internet (1) DOD (6) Identified Organization (3) ISO (1)

What is a MIB? MIB – Management Information Base ASCII text file that describes an SNMP Network Element as a list of data objects Translates numeric strings into Human Readable text Provides the data type of each OID
