Presentation transcript:

Goal Setting

Setting Our Goals: Brainstorm 1. How long before you go back to your old “study/homework” routine. WHY? 2. Are you setting yourself up for failure because of PROCRASTINATION? Procrastination is the killer of dreams

Setting Our Goals, cont. 3. Describe goals you’ve SET and ACCOMPLISHED 4. What is one behavioral change you’d like to accomplish in order to reach your academic goals? 5. THREE Procrastination types: Relaxed, Genius, Avoider 6. THREE ways to help with procrastination: Put away pleasure Don’t multitask Take breaks – non-stimulating breaks

SHORT Term Goals Can be achieved quickly- in days or weeks Think of 3 different short term goals you have

LONG term goals May take months or years to achieve Can have multiple short term goals within each long term goal Think of 3 different long term goals you have

Differences Example: Passing Health- is a LT goal. Passing your next Health assignment is a ST goal that will help you reach your LT goal.

6 S’s for Goal Setting Safe – can it harm you? Satisfying – will you feel good? Sensible – is it realistic? Similar – like other goals? Not contradicting? Specific – clear goal, not broad. Supported – adults or others to support you?

Action Plan Step-by-step set of directions that will help you reach your goal Think of it as a “To Do” list Should contain dates, rewards, and ability to track progress

Rewards Have sensible rewards that you can decide with your family for reaching goals. Small goals= small rewards, Large goals= large rewards!

Stay Positive Use positive statements that help to reinforce your OWN belief that you can achieve your goal!

What can get in the way of goals? Goal Blockers: Things that can delay goals or make them harder to achieve Example: Watching TV or playing video games instead of doing homework. Talking with friends in class instead of paying attention. Suggestion: Make time for the goal blockers, after you’re all finished with your work Goal Busters: Things that can eliminate your goals altogether Example: Dropping out of school, doing drugs, committing crimes, lying or falsifying information

Goals You’ve Set List some short term goals you set in the past month: Circle the goals you achieved What helped you achieve those goals? What kept you from achieving the ones you didn’t reach? List some long term goals you’ve had in the past. Circle the goals you’re still working on Did you reach any of the goals you set? Which ones?

Action Plan Look at your long term goals that you hope to achieve. 1) How are you going to achieve it? 2) What are the steps needed in achieving your goal? 3) Tell me what strengths you have that will help you achieve your goal 4) Who do you have in your life that can help you reach this goal and prove me wrong?
