Why does Financial Literacy Matter

THE BIG PICTURE - joint project between Chilliwack Community Services and Chilliwack Learning Society. We hope to improve financial practices by providing a deeper understanding of foundational and basic day to day financial management. service providers and organizations will exchange and pool expertise 20 literacy and social service volunteers or staff will receive facilitator training to provide financial literacy workshops. 50 of our financially vulnerable citizens will increase their personal knowledge, impacting their families and friends and future generations as this education is shared. 100 The community will benefit from the development of sustainable financial literacy information, programs and supports.

How Does This Work in Chilliwack? 1. Chilliwack Learning Society’s Financial Literacy Coordinator will: a)create a Community Financial Literacy Resource List b)create a sustainable long term community committee c)hosted a Knowledge Exchange to share ideas/resources – Sept. 25 d)host financial literacy facilitator training sessions for service providers e) host a Community Financial Literacy Fair for the public in the spring 2.Chilliwack Community Services’ Financial Literacy Support Worker: a)help individuals identify what they already know and assist in increasing knowledge levels, as needed, refer them to the right door and determine their preferences around follow up support. b)provide informative and educational workshops to community groups/agencies

Why Does Financial Literacy Matter? How we manage our money affects every aspect of our lives: our health, our safety, our relationships, our goals, our dreams, our self-respect. Stable housing - better budget choices – healthier minds and bodies – less stress Connected with others – respect from family and friends – increased self-confidence – more choices Self-esteem- empowerment - welcomed by the community

What exactly is Financial Literacy? Increased financial literacy empowers us to take control of our lives IT IS – EDUCATION: increasing understanding to help us make more informed financial decisions. giving participants tools to increase their financial success. specific topics - how a credit card works, options, interest calculations, how to. IT IS NOT: financial counselling with specific follow up on how goals are being met. referrals to specific financial products an endorsement or opinion of any financial products, services or service providers
