Graphic Organizers: The superior form of note taking NOTE TAKING

 Outline main ideas of the lesson  Organize information  Tie new knowledge to previous knowledge  Helps students understand content better  Applicable to various learning styles  Teacher presenting the lesson to be applied to the graphic organizer aids audio learners  Graphic organizers aid visual learners  Active involvement in the lesson aids kinesthetic learners  Applicable to various learning abilities  Outlines main ideas for lower-achievers  Helps synthesize more in-depth knowledge for higher-achievers WHY USE GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS?

Order of Operations Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication and Division Addition and Subtraction

Research supports to use of graphic organizers According to the Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychological and Behavioral Science: A laboratory experiment was conducted with rats in a maze to determine the effect of “single-route training” in comparison to “multiple-route training”. It was determined that the “single-route training” was not as effective as the “multiple-route training” because it did not correlate a relationship between different parts of the maze. “Single-Route Training” represents the use of graphic organizers, which provided the most successful maze completion.

 Before the lesson  Advance organizers provide structure and expectations of students.  During the lesson  Students can be given a graphic organizer to complete in order to map new concepts. Students may simply skim material, though.  Students can be given the assignment to form their own graphic organizers. This promotes deep understanding.  After the lesson  Students review the material they have learned, tie it to previous knowledge, and compare different aspects of the lesson. WHEN TO USE GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS

Graphic Organizers Graphic organizers provide students with a means to understand new material in a more complex form. This way, students are more likely to recall the information. Class should be structured around student success. This includes note taking. The job of educators is to take advantage of the way students learn.
