CAREERS THAT INVOLVE PROFESSIONAL WRITING Danielle Wightman, Deanna Garrison, & Siobahn Jones

What is PW?  Dànielle DeVoss: "Almost everyone writes on the job. Professional writers write as their job."  Professional writing is used in multiple fields  It can be used in business while writing reports or in science to write grants for experiment funding  For this presentation we will look at three different jobs: the Director of the Mackinac Horseman’s Association, an editor, and social media manager

Director of the Mackinac Horseman’s Association  What is MHA?  Leanne Brodeur, Director  Writing as the MHA Director Leanne Brodeur, MHA Director

New Riding Facility

Editor  “An editor’s job is to review and edit manuscripts, give authors guidance and direction for clarifying and otherwise improving their pieces” – The Princeton Review  Career is different from stereotypes  Not a person that sits in a cozy office and proof reads all day

Editor’s Workday  An editor’s job and workload varies depending on the publication season and each working day can be different  Spend part of each day dealing with s, checking over submissions and managing the number of s  Editors meet with many people, from authors to illustrators and often are unable to do any actual editing at the office, having to take home work and complete it

Social Media Management  Social media is defined by Wikipedia as “the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue.”  Social media managers reach out with blogs, Twitter, FaceBook, LinkedIn and other forms of published writing that require the skills of a professional writer.

Social Media Management The Hectic Life of a Social Media Manager

Conclusion  Even if your job title does not include professional writing, it can still be a valued skill.  If you graduate with a Professional Writing degree, you may not necessarily be required to write. However, writing experience will help you in your career.  Social Media managers are marketers, promoters, public relations experts, and above all, good writers.
