Towards the end of the fourth millennium BC several independent city-states were unified to form a single state, marking the beginning of over 3,000 years of pharaonic civilization in the Nile Valley. Fertile earth left behind after the yearly Nile flood provided the basis for Egypt’s agricultural prosperity, a key factor in the longevity of the civilisation.

The origin of the museum dates back to a collection of over 80,000 articles from the private collection of Sir Hans Sloane, physicianand naturalist. This doctor donated his private collection to the British state as indicated by his will that dates from 1753. Collection included 40,000 books, 7,000 manuscripts, paintings by Durer, his collection of science and medicine, and antiquities of Egypt, Greece, Rome, Middle East and Far East, and Latin. The British government acquired the collection for the symbolic price of 20,000 pounds, money that was obtained through a public lottery organized by the British Parliament, as shown by its charter of January 7, 1753. In addition, the library was purchased by Sir.Robert Cotton and the antiquarian Robert Harley.

The museum officially opened to the public on January 15, 1759, on the Montagu's mansion, but when it got started small in 1852 and at the same location, the construction of a new neoclassical building, designed by Robert Smirke. The construction of the new home of the museum, which has reached our days, ended in 1857 with the construction of the circular study room.
